Wabtec's Precision Dispatch System (PDS) is an advanced software solution that provides real-time train dispatching functions that direct and control the movement of trains over a railroad network.

Wabtec's Track Manager is a stand alone software product that enables the customer to enter, update and maintain the track topology data for their railroad network.

Who will you be working with?

You will work very closely with Norfolk Southern PDS project team and Track Manager product team.

You will be tightly connected with the PDS application software development teams as well as the DBA's who own and support the Database COTS infrastructure.

Additionally, you will represent Wabtec to the Norfolk Southern customer for matters related to PDS Oracle relational databases.

This an individual contributor role that reports to Senior Manager, Application Software Engineering.

How will you make a difference?

You will be the Application Database Engineer for PDS and Track Manager application products.

You will gain deep knowledge of database schemas and application queries and provide SME guidance to the software teams on those items.

You will provide SME guidance to the PDS and Track Manager application development teams concerning SQL query optimization and perform PL/SQL development.

You will be on call to provide hands on troubleshooting of database issues in Customer Production environment in case of system outage or major functional breakdown.

Starting in 2025 you will also work on the next generation PDS with Cockroach Database.

The role comprises of three major scopes of work described below.

(1) Duties to support In House test Environments

(2) Duties to support Customer Production installations

(3) Duties to support PDS and Track Manager new feature software development

What do we want to know about you?

Your Must have:

  • Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in computer science, technology, and engineering.

    • 5+ years PL/SQL development experience using Oracle database.

    • 3+ years supporting Oracle database in production environment.

    • 3+ years Oracle OEM v13 (no later than v12)

    • Familiar with Oracle Golden Gate, Oracle Data Guard, Oracle Performance profile, SQL developer, Oracle Optimizer tool

    • Config mgmt. tools : GITHUB/GITLAB

    • Strong PL/SQL skills and experience

    • Oracle query optimization skills - Deep understanding of how to use indexes, partitioning, and complex data types.

    • Scripting experience

    • Linux environments

    • Highly proficient in spoken and written English

    • Self-starter and able to set direction for self and others when uncertainty exists.

    • Minimal supervision to perform duties.

    • Proactive work ethic to energetically identify risks and mitigate them.

  • It would be great if you had the following:

    • Cockroach Database experience

    • Run Time database (E.g Versant)

What will your typical day look like?

  • Perform Application DBA duties to support the Oracle databases in the PDS and Track Manager development and test environments

    • Rebuild oracle schemas as needed

    • Troubleshoot and mitigate Oracle databases issues concerning content, usage and configuration

    • Oracle database performance monitoring, analysis and improvement

    • Engage with development teams to understand technical issues with SQL queries and data structures

  • Perform duties to support PDS and Track Manager in customer production environments

    • On call to provide troubleshooting support for customer production Oracle databases issues related to structure, content and performance.

    • Collaborate and engage with Customer database engineers and customer DBA's.

    • Actively participate in PDS software installations with respect to Oracle database content and structure.

    • Hands on installation of Schema changes for Track Manager database

    • Database Reporting Functionality support for Customer reports

    • Customer schema backups and manage retention solutions

  • Perform duties to support new feature development for the PDS and Track Manager products

    • Develop new queries using SQL to support PDS and Track Manager new feature development

    • SME guidance and approval of new SQL queries and schema changes from software development teams

    • SME guidance to PDS and Track Manager teams to ensure database performance

    • Develop/update stored procedures in Track Manager

    • Develop/update PL/SQL solutions for PDS

    • Plan and commit to your own scope as part of larger Agile PI planning.

    • Develop and deliver all process artifacts within sprint cadence.

    • Provides Status on Development progress against sprint plan

    • Adhere to all Wabtec Engineering, Quality and security processes.

    • Actively participate in all Agile processes.

    • Proactively share information across the team, to the right audience with the appropriate level of detail and timeliness

    • Engage with the Next Generation PDS project team and ramp on Cockroach database to assume duties to support new feature development by 2025.

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • This position is required to talk and hear on a regular basis.

  • This position with be needed to travel less than 10%

  • This position will have the need to use a computer for programing and interacting with their team.

  • This position may be asked to perform duties outside of their function or trade, for which adequate training will be provide is necessary.
