Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from real women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Dinusha Briley, the Assistant Manager, ISD — Product Engineering and Delivery Services (PEDS) at Navy Federal Credit Union, a company she has been at for 10 years. One of the reasons she’s stayed so long is thanks to the company's impressive support for employees.
“Navy Federal Credit Union supports its employees by providing comprehensive and innovative development opportunities and resources,” Briley tells us. “There are a variety of learning programs, including an Executive Development program, Aspiring Leaders program, mentorship programs, and many more.”
In fact, Briley herself is part of the 2022 Aspiring Leaders program cohort, which she tells us offers high-performing individuals a chance to gain management experience through a nine-month rotation to another department. “It helps develop the essential skills necessary to succeed,” explains Briley.
In the video below, Briley tells us more about why she loves working at Navy Federal. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.
I joined Navy Federal in August 2012 as a member relations advisor for our contact center operations department. A year later, I moved to real estate lending, and I spent about a year there as an administrative assistant.
HR was my home for eight years. There, I moved from a Staff Assistant role to a Senior Business Unit Financial Analyst, where I managed projects and Annual Financial Planning. Early this year, I moved to the ISD department as an Assistant Manager for Payment Services as part of my rotation for the Aspiring Leaders program, which opened the opportunity for me to accept a full-time role as of August.
The most rewarding aspect of my job is developing my skills and helping to foster the growth of my team.
Team development requires nurturing, intention, and inclusive leadership. It also requires a level of self-awareness as a leader. What is each person's strength? How can one person's strength improve another person's opportunity? My personal mission is to create a culture of trust, encourage leadership in others, and maintain a work-life harmony.
For me, the single most rewarding aspect is the interaction with people. As a leader, I enjoy figuring out how to empower the entire team to reach their full potential.
I would describe the culture of Navy Federal Credit Union as a united front, people-oriented, friendly, and collaborative. Navy Federal Credit Union uses a more inclusive approach, just like in a family. When your whole team is behind you, it's nice to know that they will catch you if you fall. Our family-like culture boosts employee engagement, and happy employees rise together toward our mission: our members.
Navy Federal allows for each of its employees to be their natural selves. My favorite thing about Navy Federal is the feeling of belonging at work and being able to bring my authentic self every day.
When I feel a sense of belonging, I can share ideas, confidently speak up, and fully contribute to Navy Federal's success and mission. A sense of belonging is what unlocks the power of diversity.
Navy Federal is always looking for fresh talent. Some advice I would give other women looking to start or expand your career is to use your social media presence to brand yourself and to stand out to your hiring managers and recruiters. A few easy ways to brand yourself are by expanding what's on your resume onto your social media profiles, including a short bio about your skills, and sharing articles that show you're an expert in your industry.
Another important piece of advice is to network. In my opinion, who you know is just as important as solid skills and experience when it comes to the job search. Building genuine relationships starts simply by talking to people. Investor events, support groups, coaching sessions, and LinkedIn are all great ways to build connections for anyone looking to start your career.
