Networking is difficult for so many people, even the most confident among us. Fortunately, in today's world, we have a huge number of tools available to help us through the process. In fact, we don't even need to leave the home to make connections these days — connections that can be long-lasting and take us far in our careers can even happen virtually.

LinkedIn is one of the best resources available for growing and nurturing your network. Even still, it can be intimidating to reach out to contacts or prospective contacts. That's why we've created three templates to help you establish and maintain connections.

Template #1: Reaching out to someone you know

Hi Sarah,
It was so lovely to meet you at [networking event or conference]. I so enjoyed our conversation about [topic you discussed, with specific examples referenced]. I'd love to talk further and hear more about your latest projects — let's definitely stay in touch!
Best,
Camille

Template #2: Reaching out to a colleague you don’t know in your field

Hi Sarah,

I came across your [article/podcast/other work] in [source] and so enjoyed your work. I especially appreciated [specific details] and would love to connect and learn more about your thoughts on [subject]. I'm also in the industry, currently working at [name of employer], and would love to keep in touch.

Best,

Camille

Template #3: Reaching out to someone who works at a company that interests you

Hi Sarah,
I came across your profile, and I'm really impressed with your work. I see you're connected to my former colleague, [name] — small world! I also noticed you work at [company name]. I'm looking into working there myself, and I'd love to hear about your experiences there and how you landed your role.
Are you available for a phone call this week?

Best,

Camille

Final networking tips

Ultimately, you want to establish common ground with the contact or prospective connection. That's the way you will forge a connection with them and pique their interest. Remember, too, that not everyone will respond immediately or at all. That's okay. The more messages you send, the more likely your efforts will pay off!
