Do you remember when you were a kid eagerly waiting for the last day of school to end so you could start summer break? If you were like me, you couldn’t wait for summer to begin. I loved school, but who doesn’t love summer? My days were filled with endless television, reading, creative writing and blissful relaxation. Now that we are adults, finding time to truly unwind and decompress is a must; otherwise, you feel extremely overwhelmed and tired of your busy life. Things don’t have to be this way. Check out these five easy steps you can take this weekend to make you feel like you are on summer break again.
Not everyone is a fan of napping, but I am a huge purveyor of this peaceful activity. Whether you are into 20-minute power naps, or you are like me and prefer a full 2-hour slumber, napping is one of the best ways to turn your weekend into a mini summer break for yourself. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “[n]aps can restore alertness, enhance performance and reduce mistakes and accidents. A study at NASA on sleepy military pilots and astronauts found that a 40-minute nap improved performance by 34% and alertness 100%.” If you want more peace and tranquility over the weekend, you absolutely need to schedule a nap or two for yourself.
Over the summer, you usually hear the noise and yelling of kids living their best lives outdoors. Adults really aren’t that much different than kids when it comes to the things that help us enjoy life. When we get outdoors to walk, hike, run, play sports, swim, or engage in other outdoor activities, we feel better. Moving our bodies feeds our minds, bodies and souls. A weekend filled with hours soaking in the sun, will have you feeling like a kid in no time.
I have always been an avid reader. Why? Reading is how you expand your mind; it is how you can live multiple lives. When you are reading a good book, you lose track of time. Reading for fun is a sure way to get you out of your head into a place of ultimate calmness.
Are you a fan of shopping? One of the best ways to enjoy your weekend is to visit your favorite stores and take a look around. You don’t even need to buy anything. You are there to enjoy the atmosphere and check out new items just because you can, like when you were a kid in the toy aisle. If you meet up with friends, you can make the activity even more fun.
Getting involved in creative and artsy projects is a wonderful way to feed your inner child. Whether you get into creative writing, painting, coloring or a DIY project, you will have fun doing something that is purely for your enjoyment. And you never know what will happen from devoting time to mixing your creative juices — maybe you have a book or famous painting in you.
