Angela Grant always knew she would take a nontraditional route to becoming an attorney. Now, as head of Compliance & Legal at Hippo Insurance, she knows it was well worth the journey. This week's Fairygodboss describes how  standing up for who she is and what she can accomplish has led her to where she is today.
Fairygodboss of the Week: Angela Grant
Head of Compliance & Legal — Hippo Insurance
Mountain View, CA
FGB: Tell us a little about your career. How did you get to where you are now?
AG: I've always wanted to be an attorney. I also knew my path would be a nontraditional one. I also never thought I would be working in the insurance industry for almost 30 years. I started out working for GEICO while attending college back in 1989, and upon graduation, I was promoted and worked in claims. I decided to go to law school nine years after undergrad and five years after I had my first child. It was not an easy path but it was most certainly worth the journey. All of my work challenges and experiences prepared me for my current role.
FGB: What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?
AG: My proudest accomplishment is raising two wonderful children who are true global citizens.
FGB: What is a challenge that you've faced and overcome?
AG: I've faced many challenges during my career. One of the biggest was the attempt other people would make at trying to define who I am and what I can accomplish. I overcame this challenge by doing my best everyday and exercising complete forgiveness in my personal and professional exchanges with other people.
FGB: Who is YOUR Fairygodboss? and Why?
AG: Robin Bogdanich. Robin is an amazing compliance professional who has taken the time to train and coach many people in the insurance industry. She is well respected among regulators and by her colleagues. Robin is smart and creative!
FGB: What do you do when you're not working?
AG: I enjoy spending time with my family when I'm not working.
FGB: If you could have dinner with one famous person—dead or alive—who would it be?
AG: Great question! I would love to have dinner with Marianne Williamson. One of my favorite books is A Return to Love.
FGB: What is your karaoke song?
AG: I don't sing but I love anything by Prince (rest in peace).
FGB: What is your favorite movie?
AG: One of my favorite movies is The Secret Life of Bees.
FGB: What book would you bring with you on a desert island?
AG: The Four Agreements for sure!
FGB: What is your shopping vice? What would you buy if you won the lottery?
AG: My shopping vice is jewelry. I love pretty rings, necklaces, and earrings! If won the lottery, I would buy books for school libraries in underfunded communities.
FGB: What is the #1 career tip you'd like to share with other women who want to have successful careers like you?
AG: My #1 career tip is stay in a state of LOVE and don't allow people, circumstances, or things to sway you from your journey. Be courageous and full of hope and know where you want to go NEXT. Life is good and is definitely worth living fully.
FGB: Why do you love where you work?
I love where I work because our Hippo team is like a family. We are doing fun and exciting work, and we all genuinely like and respect each other. It's a winning combination!
