Contrary to popular belief, job-hopping is not a necessity for career fulfillment or advancement. As an employee of Bank of America Corporation for 10 years, Erin Blanchard’s career is proof that you can thrive professionally — promotions and all — within the same company.

Her career took off when she first started with Bank of America as an intern, moving into her final year of college. She’s since held six full-time positions at the company, and is now a region executive of consumer banking and investments field advisors at Bank of America.

“I’ve advanced my career at the company by building relationships, demonstrating my openness to change and trusting in the leadership at Bank of America to help me achieve my goals,” she says.

The stable and supportive work environment at Bank of America has allowed her personal life to be equally as fulfilling as her professional life. In those same 10 years, she’s also gotten married, earned her Master’s degree, bought a home and had two children. “Coincidentally, big milestones in my personal life have seemed to align with promotions at work. I’m fortunate to be able to work for a great company, and managers, that have always supported both aspects of my life.”

She recently spoke to Fairygodboss about her successful career in finance, her favorite aspects of the company and what’s ultimately led her to stay at your company. Check out her responses below.

How long have you been with your company? What about it made you first want to join?

I was intrigued by the size and scope of the company when I began my career at Bank of America as an intern between my junior and senior years of college. After graduating, I landed a full-time position and have been with them ever since. It’s been a solid 10 years of learning and growing with the company, and I’m hopeful for many more.

Tell me about the roles that you’ve held at your company, as well as your current one. What about this role most excites you?

I’ve held six full-time positions with the bank since I first joined. I started as a Business Support Lead, moved into the role of Financial Solutions Advisor, then Market Sales Manager, Sales Performance Manager, Edge Performance Manager and finally, Region Executive which I’m still in today.

In my current role, I have the privilege of leading a team of market leaders who manage 120 advisors that meet with clients everyday and help them achieve their financial goals. I find the most joy in my role when my teammates achieve career success, in whatever way that looks and feels like to them.

What’s something you’re especially good at work?

I’m especially good at connecting with others, understanding what makes each of us successful and helping people utilize their unique talents to be successful.

What’s the first (and/or last) thing you do at work every day?

At the start and end of everyday, I connect with my team via phone or email.

A lot of people believe that developing your career means changing companies, and not infrequently. What has enabled you to develop/advance your career without job hopping?

I’ve advanced my career at the company by building relationships, demonstrating my openness to change and trusting in the leadership at Bank of America to help me achieve my goals.

Ultimately, what has led you to stay at your company?

Since starting with the company, I’ve moved to Boston, gotten married, bought a house, earned my Master’s degree and have had two children. Coincidentally, big milestones in my personal life have seemed to align with promotions at work. I’m fortunate to be able to work for a great company, and managers, that have always supported both aspects of my life.

What’s something you think most people (perhaps even current employees) don’t know about your company that you think they should?

Despite being a large organization, it feels very intimate and we work across different lines of business very well.

What was the best quality of the best boss you’ve ever had?

The most effective bosses I’ve ever worked with provided honest, constructive feedback and noticed talents within me that others may have overlooked.

What’s the most memorable piece of career advice you’ve received?

Run to a job not from one. Be open to change and take on new challenges.
