Working in showbiz might seem glamorous, but as Bill Hader touches upon in a new interview with Variety, all those hours away from home can make another very important part of your life particularly difficult and heartbreaking: parenting.
According to Variety, Bill, who many of us might remember as a former cast member on Saturday Night Live—Stefon, anyone?—is busier than ever. His HBO comedy series about a hitman-turned-aspiring-actor, called Barry, which he also stars in, just completed its first season last year, and since then, he's found the time to appear in the horror film, It: Chapter Two, scheduled to be released in September, and work on writing season two of Barry. He's also the dad to three girls—Hannah, 9, Harper, 6, and Haley, 4—whom he shares with ex-wife and filmmaker Maggie Carey.
All that busyness, however, has meant less time with his daughters, which he feels guilty about. He told Variety, “I think I saw my kids a total of five days all summer. It was terrible. So I’m going, ‘Next summer I’m taking off. And I’m going to spend every day with them.’" He continued, "It’s this weird thing where when you’re in this industry, you don’t have time to be with them, and it’s really, really difficult. I’m getting emotional right now talking about it.”
Bill later told Variety, “Congrats, it’s the first interview I’ve ever cried in.”
Aww! The working parent guilt is real.
To spend more time with his kids this summer, Bill revealed he already has a plan: once he's done with season two of Barry, he'll be working from home on a new project—writing a screenplay for a movie he would also be directing. He'll be home so much with his children, he said, “They can see me all day if they want ... They can really get sick of me.”
Good luck, Bill! As so many working moms and dads know, being able to work from home can truly be a blessing.
