Got a Remote Job? This City Will Give You Rent Money PLUS $10,000 to Work from There

For most moms, being able to work from home is a pretty great perk. However, Tulsa, OK is looking to sweeten the deal even further by providing remote workers with cash and rent assistance in exchange for relocating there.

A new initiative called Tulsa Remote is attempting to attract people to the city with some great benefits. It’s being run by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and, according to a statement on the website, was created “to enhance Tulsa's talented and successful workforce community by bringing diverse, bright and driven individuals to the city for community building, collaboration and networking.”

Tulsa Remote is offering selected applicants $10,000 cash paid in installments within the first year, a $300 per month stipend for housing and free access to a downtown co-working space. To be eligible you must be over 18 years old, a full-time remote employee or self-employed, able to work in the United States and able to move to Tulsa within six months of being selected.

To be considered for Tulsa Remote you have to fill out the application on the website. The application process is billed as “less like a job interview, more like a first date” and involves two interviews including one in Tulsa.

The money may be incentive enough, but the initiative also lays out more benefits to making the big move. The cost of living is significantly cheaper in Tulsa compared to most major cities in the country. The website estimates that it is 61 percent cheaper than New York City and 38 percent cheaper than Los Angeles.

Tulsa Remote will also help make the transition as smooth as possible by helping with finding housing and even setting up mixers with the locals.

“We've designed community building programming, events and meetups to help you engage with the organizations, local nonprofits and individuals that are working to make Tulsa the best it can be,” the website states.

The website also lists many of the activities than be enjoyed in Tulsa including family-friendly options like museums, parks, wildlife and the recently opened “Gathering Place” with plenty of play areas for kids.

While it may seem that the whole program is geared towards younger remote workers, a representative from Tulsa Remote confirmed to Working Mother that working moms are more than welcome to apply and that they “absolutely want to include families in our program.”
