“I feel great purpose at my job,” says Judy Nelson, an Outside Sales Professional (OSP) at Terminix. In her position, Nelson spends her days working outside and meeting clients in order to sell programs and services that solve pest and wildlife problems.

“Thanks to Terminix, I have knowledge that enables my clients to trust me and be excited to hear what I have to say,” she tells us. “Educating customers — being a trusted advisor — is what separates our company from others.”

Thanks to her supportive company and love for her job, Nelson shares that she is driven to do her best — everyday. “My passion at work results in my commitment and applying 100% to my job,” shares Nelson.

What about others who are looking to find their passion and purpose at work like Nelson has? For them, Nelson advises doing, “what makes you happy and comfortable, and always applying 100%.” Also, “Be heard without fear of what others think,” she emphasizes. “A powerful mind is a successful mind.”

And, if you're looking to move into leadership, Nelson suggests that you, “trust yourself, be brave, and be kind to yourself.” This is the advice she herself followed when advancing into leadership.

In this article, Nelson shares more of her best advice, gives us a glimpse into her job, and reveals how Terminix supports her every step of the way.

What do you find most rewarding and challenging about your work?

My challenge is to always be better than yesterday. I reach out to my teammates every day to discuss what we can do better that day. The most rewarding part is sharing my skills with my teammates, such as creating a better graph, roleplaying sales conversations or cross-selling, and roleplaying questions (or hesitancy) from customers. I also like seeing the team’s results. Being able to watch our Leesburg, Va., branch climb to the top — now, that’s rewarding.

Looking back on your career, what would you say has been your most valuable career mistake?

Doing most of the talking instead of listening to others, and not asking good clarifying questions.

What advice do you have for someone new to your industry?

My advice to someone new is to focus, listen, and apply yourself. Passion, preparation, and action are great keys to success

Overall, what’s the most memorable piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

When they say ‘no,’ give them 10 reasons to say ‘yes’.

Let’s talk about Terminix’s culture. What’s your favorite aspect of it, and how does your company help you succeed?

I am excited about the career growth opportunities with Terminix. My favorite is that it is a company with great benefits and a high ethical standard. It also has a strong management team that delivers everything needed for my success.

How do the people at Terminix help you attain work-life balance?

My management is amazing. Jordan Ward will go above and beyond with providing me with the tools that are required to do my job. He also allows me the flexibility to attain a low stress and happy work-life balance.
