‘I Love My Job’: Why My Supportive Company Is a ‘Perfect Example of Women’s Empowerment’

Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Lillian Liu, a Product Manager at Delta Dental Ins.

During her two years at Delta Dental Ins., Liu tells us that she has been able to significantly “grow and develop on [her] career journey.” One way that Liu has been able to achieve such growth is thanks to the exciting work she’s found at Delta Dental Ins. 

In her role at Delta Dental Ins., “there’s a constant state of learning and trying to satisfy my insatiable thirst for knowledge,” shares Liu. “From the top down, Delta Dental Ins. encourages an environment of growth. In my day-to-day work, I really feel how upper management is looking for areas of growth and technology enablement.” They achieve this by fostering growth in both applications and methodologies, as well as by encouraging employees to upskill themselves and expand their horizons, even outside of their daily tasks. “Being in this amazing space has been really exciting for me,” says Liu.

How would you describe the culture of Delta Dental Ins.?

Delta Dental Ins. fosters a culture of support and community. This comes from the leadership level and flows all the way down.

For the supportiveness, our leaders look at quarterly surveys to ensure that they are in tune with all employees to enact meaningful changes. That level of transparency and communication is felt throughout the entire enterprise.

In terms of community, Delta Dental Ins. focuses on doing good in the world. Every employee is granted two paid days off for community service, and the company also matches donations. It's not common for an enterprise to be so encouraging and so supportive! 

What’s your favorite thing about working at Delta Dental Ins.?

I have many favorite things about Delta Dental Ins., but the top two are:

1. Their focus on work-life balance… Across the enterprise, they really value you as an individual. Personally, I have felt that my time is really respected. I can see this from our leaders and across the whole organization. They value you as an individual first, so if you have anything you need to do, Delta Dental Ins. is very respectful of that.

2. On a more micro-level, one of my favorite things is my manager. She has given me not only the autonomy to take ownership and the leadership to grow and learn something new, but also provides a safe space to make mistakes and learn from these mistakes. That's how you're going to continue to develop and grow as an individual and as an employee.

How does Delta Dental Ins. support you?

What advice would you give to other women who are looking to work at Delta Dental Ins.?

The advice I would give to any woman who wants to come work at Delta Dental Ins. is to not be afraid. You always want to put your best foot forward, and there's no reason for anybody to ever shoot you down, especially here at Delta Dental Ins. 

When you come on, you'll see that the majority of our employees are women, and quite a few of them are in leadership positions. So, Delta Dental Ins. is a perfect example of women’s empowerment, growth, and that striving to do your best can accomplish what you want in your career.
