Three years ago, Consuela took a risk many of us would never consider: She moved her family to the Bay Area — where they had no family or friends — for a job at Apple. Though it may have been a daunting decision, Consuela says it’s the career move she’s most proud of, and she’s been thriving at work ever since. In fact, Consuela was just promoted to Market Leader in southern Washington and will be moving her family back home to Seattle!
As a Market Leader at Apple, Consuela feels lucky to be leading a team of “brilliant” people. “They come from very diverse backgrounds and have moved from all over the world,” Consuela explains. “The best part is that even though we are all different, we all have the same aspirations to enrich lives! Apple encourages human connection.”
Recently, Consuela shared with Fairygodboss how she sets herself up for success each morning, what she loves most about Apple’s culture and values, and her number one tip for job seekers.
How long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?
I’ve been in my current role as Market Leader for 30 days. I have spent the last three years as the Store Leader in San Francisco. Before that, I spent my first 12 years at Apple as a leader in three stores in the Pacific Northwest: Bellevue Square, University Village, and Southcenter. I did not originally come from retail. In fact, Apple was the second retail job in my career. I began my career in the tech industry at startups as a regional sales manager and a corporate recruiter.
What’s the first (and/or last) thing you do at work every day?
I walk in with a HUGE smile and bring energy while connecting with as many team members as I can. I use this time to gauge how the team is doing, paying close attention to nonverbal cues and their level of engagement with me. I’m a morning person, so the team just expects it now. LOL!
What’s the most unique or interesting aspect of your job or company?
I have the honor to lead a team of brilliant people, much smarter than me and from very diverse backgrounds, who have moved to the Bay Area from all over the world. The best part is that even though we are all different, we all have the same aspirations to enrich lives! Apple encourages human connection.
What’s something you’re especially good at when you’re at work?
I will always tell the truth. I feel it is critical that we are always honest with our team about their performance and impact. They deserve to have a leader who is 100 percent invested in them and who is willing to have a conversation to help guide them to success.
What about outside of work?
I have a passion for health, fitness, and family. My favorite fitness activity is boxing and Orangetheory. I believe that your body is very important and deserves to be treated with care and love, which sometimes includes ice cream. In addition, my family and friends are extremely important to me. We love our time at the beach — that is our happy place.
What are you trying to improve on?
I’m focused on maximizing my time! I love connecting and engaging with my team, but I know there are assignments I must complete on time. I would love to continue to focus on setting priorities and making every minute count.
What’s the one career move you’ve made that you’re most proud of?
Moving to the Bay Area to work at the Union Square Apple Store in San Francisco. We moved here with no friends or family, but quickly fell in love with the community, people, and diversity!
What do you love most about your job or your company?
I love that I work for a company with values that are aligned with mine and that is focused on leaving the world better than we found it. In addition, Apple pushes me to be a better person inside and outside of work.
What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?
I’m reading the book Multipliers by Liz Wiseman. It’s an incredible book about leaders who look for genius within those around them and try to get the best work out of everyone, versus a “diminisher” who needs to be the smartest person in the room. It’s a truly eye-opening book and a great reminder that strong leadership is powerful.
What’s your No. 1 piece of advice for women who are looking for a job right now?
Be fearless! Being fearless is your superpower. There may be moments in your life when people underestimate your ability, and you might even have a moment of self-doubt. Use these moments to gain the strength you need to take a risk and apply for that job.
Who is/was the most influential person in your life and why?
My mom. She is my superhero. She demonstrated successfully how having perseverance, positivity, and resilience can carry you through some of the most powerful moments in your life.
What’s the most memorable piece of career advice you’ve received?
Always hire people who are smarter than you.
What was the best quality of the best boss you’ve ever had?
Compassionate and empowering. I appreciate and flourish in an environment where a boss authentically cares about their people and can see or looks for the hidden strengths in all the people they lead.
