If you’re planning to return to the workforce after time away, Anita K., a Senior Product Lifecycle Management IT Technical Analyst at Cummins Inc., would highly suggest that you take the plunge by joining a returnship program.

“Returnships are a great way for professionals to gain experience and re-enter the workforce after a period of time away,” explains Anita. “They provide a supportive environment to help you transition back into the workplace and can help you build your skills and confidence.” Additionally, she highlights how these programs are also a boon to employers — companies with returnship programs get the chance to utilize the expertise of a returning professional like you after all!

In her case, Anita shares how she was able to use the Cummins RePower Program to make a successful return to work via a program that’s geared toward helping participants find a role after being out of the workforce for 2+ years. The Cummins RePower Program “provided me with the opportunity to gain valuable experience and knowledge in my chosen field, while also allowing me to build my professional network,” she tells us. “Additionally, the program provided me with the support and guidance I needed to transition back into the workforce.”

Speaking of support, Anita notes that mentorship was her favorite part of the program. “I was paired with a mentor who had been in the same industry for many years and was able to provide me with invaluable advice and guidance,” she shares.

Here, she walks us through what the returnship program was like for her, as well as its key benefits. Read on to learn more!

Let’s start at the beginning. Where did you start your career journey? What were your previous roles and experiences like?

I started as a software developer/tester and worked on various projects related to speech synthesis. I was responsible for developing and maintaining the software applications and ensuring that they met the customer's requirements. I also worked on the design and implementation, testing of the software applications, ensuring that applications met customer requirements, troubleshooting any issues that arose during the development and testing, documenting the software applications, and providing technical support to the customers.

I also developed and implemented project plans, timelines, and budgets; managed project teams and resources to ensure successful completion of projects; monitored project progress, identified potential risks and issues; and developed and maintained relationships with stakeholders and vendors.

What made you decide to leave the workforce?

I had to leave the workforce because of COVID-19. This made me take some time to explore different opportunities and gain new skills and experiences. I also wanted to spend more time with my family and focus on my health and wellbeing.

And why did you decide to return to the workforce?

I decided to return to the workforce because I wanted to use my skills and experience to make a positive impact. I also wanted to challenge myself and grow professionally.

How did you find out about the Cummins RePower Program? What was the application process like?

I found out about the Cummins RePower Program through a friend who works in the industry. The application process was straightforward and easy to complete. It involved submitting a brief application form with basic information about my previous job experience and my qualifications. After submitting the application, I received a response from Cummins within a few days.

Did you gain any new skills or connections from taking part in this program? If so, can you describe them?

I gained a number of new skills and connections from taking part in this program. I learned how to use a variety of software programs and gained experience in project management, working with clients, and collaborating with vendors and stakeholders. I also made important connections with other professionals in the industry, which has been invaluable for networking, skill growth, and other possible opportunities.

Collaborating with my colleagues to generate innovative ideas and strategies was also an exhilarating aspect of the job. Working together to solve problems and create solutions — all while building relationships and fostering a sense of camaraderie — was a rewarding experience. It was a great way to stay motivated and inspired!

How have you transitioned from this program to a full-time position? What skills and/or experiences have you taken with you?

I transitioned from the returnship program to a full-time position by demonstrating my commitment to the company and my ability to learn quickly and take on new challenges. I was able to show that I was a reliable and hardworking employee who was eager to contribute to the team.
