Watching actress Kristen Bell cracking jokes on NBC's The Good Place, you would have no idea she struggles with normal people problems. But. like most women, Bell has struggled with her confidence
“I walk into every room feeling inferior,” she said at the Women Making History Awards in Los Angeles.
"The Imposter Syndrome" makes us feel like we aren't worthy of our accomplisments, or that we're "lucky" to have achieved what we've achieved. It's something women deal with in the board room, in wage negotiations, and apparently, even on set of Emmy-nominated TV shows. And it can lead to major feelings of inferiority.
But Bell has a super simple way to overcome the feeling that we don't stack up to our peers. All you need is a Google search and a sense of humor.
She says she looked to Eleanor Roosevelt for inspiration when she feels inferior.
"And by ‘look to,’ I mean I punch ‘Eleanor Roosevelt quotes’ into Google," she laughed.
In her late night Google searches, Bell found a quick mantra that she now lives by.
"She said, ‘No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,’” Bell said. “Think about that for a second. No one can make you feel inferior unless you consent. I read that ten years ago, and I think about it every single day... I just stopped consenting.”
Bell says she now feels capable, and doesn't let anyone (or that voice in her head) make her feel inferior.
Time to add "look at Eleanor Roosevelt quotes" to my Google Calendar, ASAP.
