Hello, I’m currently an executive assistant.
I would love to do something different that’s more fulfilling. Any suggestions on types of jobs that my skills will transfer to?
Hi! I was an admin for almost 20 years and moved into Program Management.
Look into Program and Project Management to get a deeper understanding of both. Also, if there are people in these roles are your current employer, ask to set up time to meet with them and learn what they do and compare your skills.
Admin and PM have many transferable skills! Good luck.
One of my close friends was an EA at Amazon for years, and transitioned to project management (she's at Microsoft now). A lot of soft skill overlap there - people management, conflict resolution, organization, etc.
Thank you
This is a great question that I also ask myself, often I have been and EA for 10 years and ready to do something different. I love the support function of my job, but with being close to retirement, I really want to come in, help my team and go home. That's it, that's all. Looking forward to the responses here!
Hi Robin,
I have had the privilege to informally peer mentor several EAs with whom I overlapped during the early years of my career in the field of economics.
Although I am not a career coach, I am happy to share high-level anecdotal pointers and help you brainstorm ideas on jobs based on your marketable transferable skills. For this, it would be helpful if you could please provide some context, such as:
- Industry
- Number of years as an EA
- Subject matter specialties
- Certifications
- Educational background
- Value Proposition
o Hard skills
o Soft skills
I switched to Project Management but it’s not for me. I chose it because it seemed like the easiest transition.
Start with your interests, where you place value and what you consider fulfillment. Then look for nonprofits, charities and businesses that play in that cross section. That's your sweet spot.
Hi Robin, I've found that executive assistants can find fulfillment in program coordinator for non-profits organizations. Good luck in your search of a fulfilling job!
Project management, sales, customer service and office management are a few off the top of my head.
