Networking
Time and time again I see that networking is how you get jobs. I am looking to switch careers and I feel like I don't even have a network outside of the old career. How do I start building a new network? Or tap into the old one for a new job?
Hi Leisel,
My best tip is to have your elevator pitch ready to go. You don't know when or where your next opportunity to network will arise-- It could be during a routine salon trip, grocery store run, church meeting, etc. If you work on this and keep it ready to go in your mind it will help a lot:
"I'm a _______________, and I help _____________ achieve __________."
You can go into greater detail, but this basic template has helped not only myself but many of my students and clients.
Also, depending on your field consider browsing Meetup.com. You can find different "meet ups" in your location and network with people who have similiar interests and skills.
From there, focus on what you do well - not how much the job search sucks or how you're struggling. Frame everything as positively as you can - you can cry on or punch your pillow later :) Focus on building relationships with each person you meet rather than asking for help right away. It's ok to mention you're looking for opportunities, but don't lead with it. If you take a genuine interest in others they're likely to return the kindness.
I hope that helps, and I am rooting for you!
Hi Liesel, one tip I can offer is to make sure that as many of your network connections know your intention (unless your search is confidential) - they will help you if they know what kind of opportunities to send your way. It's helpful to remind people on a regular basis as well (monthly, quarterly, etc).
For example, if there are any courses or classes you can take towards your new field, when you complete those update your network on your latest accomplishments or strides.
Lots of great tips ladies. Thank you. I'll just keep on keeping on. I appreciate your help.
Hi Liesel, I am in a similar situation to you - I'm making a career change to new industry. I'm finding LinkedIn not that helpful in the sense that I can get people to connect with me, but beyond that, when I try to start conversation with them (not asking for a job), it goes "crickets". I'm finding LI a great tool for connecting when you are working, but when job seeking, it's great to see jobs and apply to them, but people who are working don't seem to bother responding to people if they don't have a need.
Hi Liesel, download my free ebook at www.landdreamcorporatejobs.com and check out Step 4 for a system and templates to build your hiring manager tribe. Bottom line, you need to make a list of 100 companies and use LinkedIn to connect with peers, supervisors, HR and the diversity office, by finding something you have in common with them (ex: alma mater, field of work, etc.). When they accept, you'll ask them about their goals to reach out with valuable information. Eventually you can ask to talk to them for 10 minutes letting them know you're exploring your next career move and you'd like to learn more about their experience at their company.
Find people who do the kind of job you want and ask them for coffee. Ask them who they can introduce you to. And build your network from there!
Facebook is also a great place to look for groups to network in. Although now Fairygodboss has groups now and I'm sure plenty of bossladies on here will be able to guide you on your next career venture!!!!
Hi Liesel! I think you can build a new network and also tap into your existing one.
Do you have an idea on what kind of career you're interested in? These days there are networking groups available for most major job areas. For example, I'm in the Women in Product group in which I am mostly lurking, but I've previously reached out to folks on there to ask them for coffee chats.
I've also told friends that work in similar industries that I'm looking to speak to those that work in Product for learning purposes and they were willing to connect me with Product folks at their respective companies, so that I can gain different perspectives on the field!
Hope that helps or gives you some ideas at least!
