Creating the Freelance Career

Would it help you if you could understand how public relations and media actually works for regular people?

This would be media 101 not DYI PR. Would it help you to be able to create publicity for yourself, your small business, or your side hustle?

I agree with Rakshan, but want to further clarify. I don't think that business owners should be doing PR for themselves. Whether it's a small business or a side hustle, that takes a lot of work and investment into the product and the business strategy. Every minute that goes to areas where they are not an expert can hurt their business, and that's especially true with PR; long term PR success requires being able to look objectively across all communications for the business and when your heart and soul are in it, that objectivity is almost impossible to conjure. That's why even some businesses that hire PR pros have difficulty being successful; they don't want to listen to that objective advice. That all said, budgeting for a PR professional to come in on a contract or part-time basis to handle press releases, media pitching, social media, and media strategy can truly make a positive difference for small business owners.

Taking advice from experts will be my next class ;) This is not how to DYI your own PR but more here is how the media actually works and what you can and cannot expect. I’ve seen so many small businesses fork over thousands for something that sounded awesome and was basically a fantasy.

I agree that it is easy to try to be a jack of all trades but master very little. That's why it is important to outsource to experts and if you choose them wisely, they can pay for themselves in added exposure, sales, etc.

Absolutely, you should invest in PR for yourself if you want to be noticed. All businesses and people are investing in PR to get the visibility they deserve.

Yes and there is a case for branding yourself if you are solo when hiring an agency would not be recommended.
