Updating LinkedIn/resume with undeserved demotion.

The company I work for has been going through some struggles. There have been layoffs and salary cuts. After the last salary cut, they demoted several management roles titles "to align better with our current salaries". So, my pay has been cut and my title changed from Manager to Assistant Manager, but my job duties have remained the same. I haven't updated LinkedIn or my resume with my new job title. Is it dishonest to apply for positions without disclosing this undeserved demotion? Could/would a perspective employer hold it against me? I feel like this is something I could and would bring up during an interview, but so far I can't seem to get past the application phase. Would noting the demotion due to a corporate restructure make sense or seem like I'm making excuses?

Leave LI as is. Leave resume as-is. Don't explain (unless asked...and why would a prospective employer question a title?) When asked about a current or previous role just share what you want to share....your awesome accomplishments and skills. : )

In a past role, I ended up with three titles in the span of a year (Writer, Senior Writer, Senior Technical Writer). One was a promotion and the other was a realignment of titles across team. On my resume, I wrote: "Senior Technical Writer" and kept that title on LinkedIn. When it came time for a background check for a new job, I explained that I actually had three titles during that time due to realignment. The HR person simply asked me to list any other titles in an email for any jobs and told me it happens all the time. I never heard anything else about it. I suspect it really IS that common and you should represent yourself in a way that represents what you actually do on a social media site (LinkedIn) and your resume as long as it is not done in a way that misrepresents yourself.

I'm going through the same situation with my current company. We went through the layoff, pay cuts, downsize management etc. To answer your question, I would say it the truth your company did go through demotion. I would update my resume and start looking for your worth.

Don't change it on your resume but put the accurate title on the background check form.

Something like this has happened to me twice. I decided to ignore both "temporary" jobs. I wound up losing both jobs anyway, so focusing on the years at the better-looking job seemed to be the right thing to do for my career. I consider it a white lie. If they don't ask for job title at the beginning and end of my time there, I won't volunteer it.

Don't change it, you may state more like manager - i.e. more generic description. You deserve more and I would absolutely start applying outside.

If you are doing the same duties, I'd leave LinkedInas is. JMO
