Career Changers!

Hi there!

I am currently an accountant in Texas and am looking to change into a new career. I am interested in Human Resources, Recruiting, or any other role that I could fit and would appreciate any input on finding a job with only accounting experience. I have a Master's degree in accounting, but have found myself completely burned out of the grind. Alternatively, if you are an accountant yourself, can you offer any advice on finding a company that supports working mom's and offers more flexibility? I believe my burnout stems from a lack of time off and having to save all my PTO for the birth of my son.

Hello! Many accountants have made your same jump and have become recruiters for accounting firms. I'm a campus recruiter at a public accounting firm and many of my counterparts and competitive counterparts had originally started their career as an accountant. I hear Texas is a very competitive candidate market so I wold say TX would have lots of recruiter opportunities

There are so many things to do and try here...My first question is have you thought about going into business for yourself? I know a couple of self-employed accountants that make enough money over tax season that they have lots of freedom the rest of the year. If you are sure that changing careers is what you want to do, I recommend picking up the book Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. They walk you through how to go about making a career change that will suit your life and bring you joy. If you would like some help navigating this, let's connect. I am working on getting certified as a coach (graduate mid-June), and intend to use their framework in my practice. PS. I am also in Texas.

I don't work in accounting but have you checked out the company reviews on fgb? they have a list of the "best companies" too which might be helpful https://fairygodboss.com/company-reviews

Thank you! I had not come across that yet, I am still new around here. I appreciate you telling me about it!
