Have or are you experiencing age discrimination?
How to tell and what to do.Good article, but it only starts the conversation. Let me share my personal experience... I'm a young senior who projects a youthful energy. People always think I'm at least a decade younger. I recently worked for a Silicon Valley company (a.k.a. Millennial Company). I went there because I was excited to be part of something wonderful and to work with bright, energized people. All that was true, but I was marginalized. That doesn't mean I didn't make friends and I certainly had come people respect what I brought, but the person I worked for directly was constantly coaching me on the things I said in meetings and wouldn't except any of my advice or ideas -- he was polite, but dismissive. The reality was I was hired because of my industry expertise, which he didn't have, and because of my vast professional network that opened many doors, which he also hadn't yet grown in his 8 years working. Sadly, when I realized my longevity solely depended upon his opinion, I found another job -- happily, I'm now a VP at a consulting firm where I'm creating a great deal of energy and rapidly improving our products and services. I loved my former company and believed in their mission, but that wasn't enough. Their loss. You need to know your own value and keep your eye on the goal.
