Side Hustle to Self Employed

Hello all!

I just joined the group. Thought I would post this here too. I want to start my own business, but how can I excel when there are so many others selling the same thing? I realized that I'm not so satisfied working for other people anymore. My independent contractor work (food deliveries, liquor promotions) has been comforting to me because I feel like I have so much flexibility and I earned more than I ever had in any W2 job I had. I've been trying to start my own business up since last November. I was so motivated to do it at the time, but I feel like my depression caused me to lose that spark. Basically, I've been lettering for the past 4 years or so and I wanted to make it into a business. So far, I've lettered vinyl stickers for myself and friends, as well as place cards for a friend's engagement party. I've also done welcome signs for a friend's wedding, and t-shirts with vinyl renderings of my own designs as well as some designs I bought off the internet. I even had business cards made with my own logo and everything. My problem is that there are so many people out there selling the same thing. I see it all over Etsy, Mercari, and TikTok. How am I supposed to sell my work when there are so many other options out there? It's very discouraging.

Use your uniqueness, there are many products but customers are looking for different things. Ask yourself the question: What makes my business unique and then use that. For example, we have about 5 different fried chicken places near my house and all of them have long lines, they sell the same products with a different twist. I personally prefer Chic-Fil-A not necessarily because they taste the best and have the best prices but also because their customer experience is awesome (taking my order at my car in long lines, points for free food in the APP, email with customer appreciations from the location, no work on Sunday honoring a day of worship etc. )

You be you! People will be attracted to you and your products. I have heard more than once, take a look at the bread isle of any major grocery store. You have how many kinds of the same product, in one isle? People still make bread with the assumption that theirs is the best and will sell more than the others. Since this is your passion, pursue it with that same assumption! You've got this!!!!
