"This University is far more conservative than others in the region. Men outnumber women among faculty/staff and the student body. There are informal networking groups among the men which isolate women and encourage a culture that minimizes women and faculty/staff of color. The number of black women faculty is abysmal. It is a plantation culture with all that means. Your direct supervisor may be able to shield you for a time but the culture is too deeply rooted to change anytime soon. "
