"The benefits at the corporate level for working mothers is fantastic. However, your pay and compensation after the initial hiring is completely dictated by HR. So do not expect to make much more than your initial hiring. I think that this policy hurts women the most because it is much harder for us to switch companies when we are more expected to care for our children and need to be at a company for a year to get their maternity leave benefits. If you switch jobs internally, expect a 1-2% pay raise if that. "

"It absolutely depends on the part of the company, however, as an engineer there is a lot of flexibility as long as you have a reasonable manager. If you are unfortunate enough to get an unreasonable manager, it is pretty easy to switch groups after 1 year in your group."

"Women are equally valued in leadership in every department. We start every meeting and conference call with a “safety moment”, which is like a constant reminder to look out for each other. There is consistent and constructive support, guidance and training to bolster everyone for growth and advancement, rather than belittling others for not knowing something. There is zero social anxiety or drama."

"I found Duke Energy's overall (slower) pace of work to lend itself very well to a healthy work life balance. In working in some of the newer areas of the company, I had autonomy in my work and was respected by all of my co-workers- even when I found myself in board rooms with all men 15-20 years my senior. Those working on the customer and innovation side of the company were open to new ideas and fun and easy to work with."

"Women are treated more fairly here than in construction, where I worked before this. My department is about 5% women. The pay and benefits are good, so you can have a stay-at-home husband to support you. During outages, we can work 6 days a week for 12 hours, but usually we work 3-4 shifts a week of 12.5 hours. There is a strict hierarchical work culture. My coworkers will attack any perceived weaknesses. Fitting into the safety gear is the hardest part: everything is made for men, and they don't like whiners. Expect the room to go silent whenever you enter for at least the first year. If you think you might fit in well in the military, you may fit in here after they get used to you."
