"While they have a modicum of flexible corporate policies, most are supervisor discretion. As a young single woman, my boss told me I needed to keep my evenings free and be flexible in order to accommodate my coworkers with families in case something urgent came up. How am I supposed to meet people and grow a family if I'm stuck at work all the time? Culture is cutthroat, expect mentors, peers, and bosses to stab you in the back. Men on the team would start talking as soon as any woman opened her mouth in a meeting or even a social lunch, manager dinged me in performance reviews because she didn't like the pitch of my voice, coworker who suffered a workplace injury was told it was her infant's fault and she should just stop picking up her baby. "If you want a fulfilling, long term career here you’re going to have to make many sacrifices for the company. Frequent moves (career path & geographically), expat assignments or rotating, lack of work life balance, expectation of being in the office even during a global pandemic for “optics”, basically doing anything that is asked of you. Once you set boundaries, it will most likely be counted against you in the archaic ranking system (ultimately driven by if your boss likes you). There are certain personality types that strive and enjoy ExxonMobil but it is a very niche group (and mostly white men). You have to really fight to demand respect from male coworkers and managers, but they will not admit to regularly talking over women or not valuing their opinions. Only positive of working at Exxon in my mind is the high salary. "

"Leaving Exxon was one of the best decisions of my life. Only in hindsight did I realize how incredibly toxic it is for women, especially women of color. My husband I worked there, started at the same time, worked similar roles, put in similar hours, received similar awards, but had an insane pay gap between the two of us. Despite my effectiveness, the only feedback I consistently received was that I "wasn't aggressive enough", which we all know is code for "we only recognize one type of leadership and its being loud and imposing- and male.""

They now give 8 weeks to both new moms and dads and new moms get 6 weeks additional recovery time but that 6 weeks is deducted from A short-term disability bank. So they treat the 6 weeks as 6 weeks sick leave that comes out of your sick time."

"Very sexist company, in many sorts of ways. Men, in higher up positions, definitely talk down to, and treat women as if they don't understand anything pertaining to cars, oil, gasoline, engine mechanics, EPA regulations, or anything regarding the automobile industry. On the same note, women, in higher up and advanced management positions, assert their authority with animosity, negativity, bullying, and fear mongering. Their snyde and snobbish attitudes create a very hostile and combative environment. The malicious and vindictive attitudes of superior employees who are supposed to be inspiring and encouraging newcomers to want to advance within the company, is so shocking and off putting at times I can only describe it as disgusting. Considering the past discretions and negative history of this company, I was so dissapointed how stingy, uncaring, and disposable they treat their employees, I would never recommend them for a job, even if temporarily, to anyone that I even remotely care about. "Official policies are great; some "local" cultures are very welcoming to women. But male:female ratio is extremely skewed, and you will often be the only woman in the room. That can make it hard to be heard, and taken seriously."

"don't recommend it, the culture is set and you learn whether you will sink or swim rather quickly. unless you have a sponsor, good luck moving up regardless of how many hours you put in. it's an old-school culture, the white male engineer arrogance is very present. It does not help that most of my fellow male colleagues have stay at home wives -- although it's tacit, you will receive incredulous looks, at times, and it is evident what they are thinking. why are you playing with the boys?"

"I would say overall it is a great company to work for - great pay, benefits and fringe benefits like education reimbursement (100%!). The caveat is that it is still mostly a "good old boys club" and women have to work much harder to be recognized and promoted. Also Their maternity/paternity leave policies need to be updated."

"ExxonMobil has worked very hard to make the culture more flexible and accommodating to all its employees, not just women. It has come a long way since the old "Exxon" days in terms of women in management and embracing diversity and inclusion as key business drivers. While the very top is still white male, there is progress in the middle that should eventually lead to a diverse boardroom. The new campus is an amazing shift towards collaboration, openness and creativity. You area able to grab your laptop and work anywhere, even at home if needed. The wellness facility is top notch and there finally is a day care facility near work. It is about as good as any job can get, if not better. As for maternity leave, there are many options provided including extended time off, part time work and remote work."

"Women are generally advancing if you are slightly outspoken and fit a certain personality - not giggly, not "sweet", not overly fashionable. You have to be driven and behave maturely - and even then many will assume you are younger/less experienced than male peers who are your same age (this goes for the under-35 set). I'm now in a lower/middle management role and work for a woman, who works for a woman - so there are many role models and at varying times we've had several women on our division's leadership team. I took 2 maternity leaves a few years ago and don't feel they've worked against me. The day to day is harder - it means making up for the fact that you leave "early" by working harder in the day and being willing to work from home in evenings."

"If you find hostility from some men out here, it's not personal. There are men here in every facet of the company that still think we don't belong out here, regardless of the job or how well you do it. There's a number of ways people try to figure out if/when you'll have a child. The company doesn't like being told no, and though it differs based on the job, turning down an offer to go to another site is typically frowned upon. If you don't want to move a lot, this might not be the place (still depending on your job). Some sites are also more stuck back in the day (like mine) than others. If you can avoid the politics and focus on building relationships, it should be good."

"If you become ill with a serious or chronic disease, the company will do everything they can to get rid of you. They follow most HR rules, but make your work life so stressful you want to leave. If that doesn't work, and you need time off for medical reasons, they get rid of you through their "disability separation" process."

"Build your technical credibility early! This is a performance based company. I took maternity leave, added on 3+months of unpaid Leave, came back on part-time basis …I had support both from my team and senior management, and it had no impact on my career progression…I went into a leadership role once I got back to full-time. Strong technical performance/credibility is like banking your "credit" for when you need it for the off-ramps of life :-)"
