"Overall work-life balance is great, and co-workers are awesome. Good maternity leave too. But it is hard for women to advance here unless they have an “in” with the owners. They don’t hire many women and we’ve vented to each other that leaders are overly-critical of us. A new mom once told me she felt really unsupported when they ripped her apart in her first performance eval back after her baby. She seemed like a great performer otherwise. Then the only woman who ever advanced to a director level position was demoted after 8 months when they did a huge lay-off. None of the other male leaders got demoted. She was also a high achiever. In that layoff, 1/2 were women in a staff that was about 1/4 female. I haven’t felt unsafe here, but it seems most of the leaders have an unconscious bias against us. I also question their money management. Not sure how much longer I will stay.
I wouldn’t advise women to completely avoid the place. If you’re looking to build a certain skillset, you’ll be working with some really smart and helpful people so you’ll learn a ton, but don’t expect promotions or huge pay raises unless you’re willing to put in 3x the work..then maybe you’ll have a shot at advancing like the men do."
