"In the arts: flexibility in course releases and less contact hours than others. But very top down. You very much have to take initiative to figure out what you want. But there will be little support to do so. Be prepared to have information very disorganized and diffuse so it is hard to orient and organize. Faculty have quit over the maternity leave policies and responses by Dean. Senior women and faculty feel she privileges and promotes European men."

"1. I would highly recommend against the Health Sciences at present, because
2. There continues to be above average shuffling and turnover of those in leadership positions, and not much involves women staying in leadership.
3. It is my belief that there should be at least more than one true success story of a woman; more is better and allows a greater choice of mentors. I did not find this. "

"Ensure the level at which you are being hired into is not completely new; that you are not an experiment. There is a missing age group of faculty because of hiring freezes 15 or more years ago. If you are coming in as a mid level faculty - beware; those above you are not helpful, those below you are given latitude for being new. 2- get everything in writing. 3. do not believe that other women are your friends or allies in helping you succeed. 4. Assume, if you are not hired into a tenured position, or a position not associated with tenure - that you are subject to the whims of people within, and outside your department, as far up as the Provost and beyond. If your college approves you for tenure, there are still those in positions in the university that care much more about public image and ability to attract new funds rather than you (despite telling you they are there to help you succeed). Compare jobs within one College (such as Health sciences vs Professional studies) and see if they are treated similarly. Although innovation and creativity is what is asked for and what you are hired for - it is not what is ultimately the outcome of the most importance. "

"There were faculty who figured out work life balance by abusing the fact that their position was designed for them to work in two places - a clinic, and at the university. I found they achieved balance by telling their clinic they were at the university and visa versa, when they were home. So - its flexible if you figure out how to work the system. I, personally, think this is dishonest, but I suffered for that rigid belief. "

"My manager changed several times. My manager did not support me at all. My manager asked me to change grades for students they thought should be higher. My manager countermanded my decision to act on a clause in my syllabus that said the student should not plagiarize. Despite electronic software showing plagiarism, and my reporting it to the student conduct board, my manager, pulled back some and softened over the rest of the cases sent. One student, while being investigated was inducted into the Honor Society of the profession. My manager told me that he did not and was not going to challenge the dean's decision to not renew my contract. He thought it would be bad for him and -- this basically told me, even though I had no ability to challenge the decision, he (and the school) who were the only ones who were allowed to challenge - were not supporting me. I cannot even explain how mixed the messages were while I went through this. In retrospect, it is so clear - others were insecure, thought that I wanted their job, were jealous of my accomplishments and as stewards of sharing my accomplishments - were worthless. I was in an impossible situation. I should have known - but - the delivery of this information was cloaked in smiles and all the right words and gestures; but I believed people, especially those in such positions. Never again - I was told so many lies that I cannot even count. The only true goal was for the supervisor to be promoted or recognized as doing their job well. "

"I think like in all of Higher Ed- it's your team. I have a fantastic female manager who is very supportive but senior leadership is very male-centric and makes it hard to see a path upward."
