"In my experience, there is more flexibility for families than for single women in particular. It's very difficult for women to date within the Department of State because men tend to find spouses in various countries instead of among their peers. While the diversity is not a bad thing, it simply limits the social abilities of single women severely. Additionally, leave times, work hours, and commissary hours, in some countries, limit the ability to do everyday tasks for single women. Single women are encouraged to take leave at different times than families, who ask for the major holidays and summers off."

"You still need a thick skin, but there are great opportunities to do great work. Moving often can be difficult for relationships, but that's true for men and women."

"We've improved a great deal over the past three decades, but still have far to go. One of the best things is the degree of independence given to most employees early in their careers."
