Career Advice Needed!
I have been a HR Coordinator, (truly a Generalist) for the past 2 years at a company that I feel like I have no growth in and I am constantly overlooked. There does seem to be a "bully" culture and I have been passed over for a Manager role by someone who truly doesn't know HR, just is a good talked and very aggressive/assertive.
I have a opportunity to maybe go somewhere else, but I am scared frozen to leave, WHY? I have never experienced this before. I am working 10 minutes from home and I think I have gotten used to my job being too easy.
Do I stay or go? If I go I could be growing my career but I will have to commute.
Has anyone else ever felt this torn and how do you know when to jump ship and what offers to take? I am normally not this indecisive!!
Friendly advice welcome.
It may well be worth the commute to get away from the bully. I'm looking for a new job now because my manager has decided that he can be a bully to me.
I'm spoiled because I've been able to work from home since covid started. One of the jobs that I'm in the running for is full time in the office. I'm struggling to decide what I'll do if I get an offer from them
I understand! I think we get complaisant in the easy parts of our jobs even though those jobs maybe are not what is best for our careers.. That is my conclusion this morning anyways!
Let me take a stab at this because I've been there.
When you're lulled into complacency, you do get small, comfortable and begin to doubt that:
1. It career growth really worth the commute
2. Do I really want to work that hard?
3. Can I do the job well and not kill myself with the hours & commute & responsibilities?
4. This job isn't that bad. The pay is ok and where could I score a job with a better commute?
5. My coworkers are great ...I would miss them if I left
6. There's always time to grow my career later.
This list goes on and on. This is not you talking....this is you because you've been out of the game. You've forgotten what an exciting, growing, stimulating position feels like. You're complacent and have justified staying hidden. It's just a mind game.
It's never a perfect time. You just take the plunge or we will be having this convo next year and tge year after that. This how people stay in the place for 15 years. You just loose your confidence little by little.
How I final took the plunge is I sat at a dinner with all my girlfriends who had amazing careers who were 10x further along than I was, each took unbelievable risks and kept pushing forward. I didn't like feeling like I was being left behind. I gave my notice the next month.
Thank you for this reply, you have truly nailed it AND inspired me! Thank you.
I was just about to write a comment when I read this one. This is exactly what I would have said. Commuting is a small price to pay for all you will gain. I love that the person above stated "it is a mind game" and "...justified staying hidden." I had the same dilemma 9 months ago. I am so incredibly happy I made the change. I found that I do still have a brain and all the necessary skills to step up my game. I now love that my boss can throw anything at me and I handling issues like a BOSS!
Good luck and be blessed. Let us know how this saga turns out.
Your job sounds far from easy! Maybe when the day is done, but in the midst it sounds pretty stressful and negative. I guess you'd have to grade the various aspects of your job on a scale in terms of importance to you and make a decision that way. You could also start looking for remote roles just to see what's out there! There will likely be even more of those than ones within a 10 minute radius :) Good luck!
Even if your current workplace is Toxic like you described change is still hard and it still can be difficult but I would definitely say go. If you feel like the opportunity is going to grow your career and have a better workplace for you the commute might be worth it.
I understand not wanting a drive to take up part of your day but you can always make the best of it. Get an audio book subscription and use that time as your "reading" time. Or find good podcasts to listen to on a topic that is of interest of you at the time cooking, mental health, physical health, organization, crafts...honestly there are so many out there.
It is always less scary to stay with the devil you know. Especially when the environment around us is so uncertain. We are all feeling the constant shifting of the ground beneath our feet, so you may be feeling more fear now than you have in the past. Research the company you are considering. Look on Glassdoor.com for reviews, Google them, read articles and anything else you can find. Maybe even ask if they have an employee that would be your peer that you can interview about the company. You will land on your feet - but that first step is a doozy!
Run like the wind Bullseye!
Unless you are happy with where you are and are comfortable being there forever, why not take a chance?
Very true! Thank you. I definitely do NOT want to be here forever.
