Hi HR Colleagues- I'm working on an article and would really appreciate your input.
What do you think are the top 2 reasons for the Great Resignation from those listed below? (or tell me if not listed.)
- work/life balance
- pay
- time off
- stress
- bad bosses
- toxic environments (more than just a bad boss)
Thanks!!!
I own a company called Analytic Advantage Career Consulting. We always ask people why they are leaving a job. Two things stand out. First, when the pandemic hit, some companies were amazing to their staff, tried to help them cope, find new jobs, etc. Those people returned to their jobs if they could. Others who were simply tossed aside want better management.
Second, giving signing bonuses but not staying bonuses. Companies were offering $10K+ bonuses for signing an offer. However, the people who had stuck it out got nothing.
Now, it's being forced back into the office. They simply don't want to do that. They've done their jobs well for the past 2 years but suddenly they are expected to add a 2 hour commute, costs, etc.
Last, but not least, is burnout. We are doing so many healthcare and education transition resumes. They work ridiculous hours and are paid badly.
Hope that helps!

Thanks so much for your post Joanne. This is incredibly helpful and the first time I see a complete answer. Thanks so much!
I work in staffing and the biggest reasons employee's are quitting jobs is because the company does not offer a remote or hybrid model and poor management.
It depends on what line of work. Blue collars tend to feel undervalued , with bad bosses and limited advancement. White collar toxic environment and stress.
I would add lack of advancement or growth opportunities. Being stagnant in my position and not in the right pay bracket for the workload/experience were my top reasons for resigning from my prior employers after 5+ years.
I feel like "toxic environment" covers all the other items on the list but if I had to choose two items, it would be pay and work-life balance.
Toxicity (bad boss) and pay (I'd substitute extra pay for PTO if comparable and the situation was right)
I work with a toxic woman but she's not a partner or direct report so I ignore her outside of "good morning"
