As a single mother pivoting into data analytics, it's been hard securing a role in my new desired field.
Even 'entry-level' positions are requesting anywhere from three years of experience on up. Any other experience you've earned doesn't seem to matter. Has anyone else transitioning or pivoting careers come across this obstacle? If so, what have you done or are doing to overcome it?
Hello Laverne send me your resume so I can take a look and offer some advice - I also may have future opportunities at Acxiom which majority of our positions are remote/homebased.
Since you sent this last week, is it still alright if I send you my resume?
I am in the same position I am in access management snd am having a truly hard time moving into any other positions , my company doesn’t use some the tools others use and companies won’t hire you until you have years of experience on some tools , it’s a catch 22 , you can’t get experience if you can’t get the job I don’t think there is a shortage of it workers because companies don’t want to hire anyone that has to be trained but no job is training proof you have to learn their systems etc
Yes, all the time!
Even if you don't have 3 years of experience in the exact role you're applying for, you could break the job description down into its functions and explain how you did this work in your previous roles. What skills transfer?
Then add in the ones the company would benefit from you having, even though they're not explicitly mentioned in the description.
Female tendency reminder: but don't box yourself into meeting 100% of the job requirements! This way you have room to grow in your new role :)
Best of luck and keep us posted!
Just curious.... what does "single mother" have to do with anything?
**You don't have to have a partner to be successful!!!!!! Anyone that tells you different is insane. **
I have been a single mother for over 13 years and a TON of hard work took me to where I am. Many stated without a man, I'd never make it. Wrong.
Have you looked into Maven Analytics? They are awesome! https://www.mavenanalytics.io/
Also, try taking some exams through Microsoft - ie Excel, PowerBI. Even without the three years of experience, showing your employer you took it upon yourself to train....
I followed this path and it worked very well. During Covoid furlough, I took SIX exams (passed them all) and a ton of courses to get me there. Tableau, Advanced Excel, PowerBI, etc. You can do it. :)
I think it has a lot to do with everything. I mentioned being a single mother as a way of showing that I have more to juggle than most beyond what comes with the decision to transition/pivot into another field. Becoming a single mother has definitely changed how I approach and prioritize things as compared to when I had no children, and to when I was with their father. Now you definitely don't need a partner to be successful, but having one does make the responsibilities easier to bear when you're striving for that success.
Since the quarantine began, I've completed about 50+ credit hours towards my bachelor's, one 300hr fellowship, and I'm currently attending a data science boot camp through Entity Academy. I'm also working on a couple certifications as well as an internship. I'll look into Maven Analytics though!
You are certainly on the right track!
Something will show up :)
