Thinking of leaving tech
Hello,
I did a career change 6 years ago, I went from retail management into network and communication management, after 2 years I finally got an entry level job, I was able to move up with another company I thought would help me grow my career, they spoke about growth and diversity etc.
I work in security which is where I want to grow my career , the problem is after another 3 years I still can’t grow. My boss is very smart and very knowledgeable, however I do not fit in with his group his click, I applied for two jobs that would have been the next step that I had the qualifications for , I was told maybe another position not this one. Then I asked for training and all the training I requested was given to the guys in my team, I start a project and he gives it to the guys my team then says he forgot he gave it to me. I am not as technical as I feel I need to be, however I am taking cybrary classes to get some kind of hands on labs , but I am very frustrated did I mention I am older woman? Well I think That has a lot to do with the opportunities he lets me have , no matter how much I do I can’t get anywhere, I don’t want to sound like I’m whining I am willing to work as hard as anyone and trying to make my opportunities but I am getting tired of hitting my head on the wall , I am trying to get out and get another job and get any experience I can on this one , but it’s very frustrating, any advice? Did I make a mistake going into security technology?
Hm, after looking at your Profile resume. If that format is the same one you are using on your actual resume. Then it would probably be best to shorten each bullet you have. Since as it stands right now it's a bit too 'wordy'. Do you have anyone you can reach out to for a resume review and mock interviews ? What is your current skill set? What does your LinkedIn profile look like? If you do not have one then I highly suggest you create one to increase your visibility for more quality opportunities to be available to you.
Note: all of the questions asked are meant to be self reflective for you to ask yourself.
Sometimes changing our approach creates better success to accomplish our goal.
You got this and please do not give up.
Hi SFGirl, yes I came close a couple times but I think my lack of “ technical “ skills like sailpoint splint etc has helped hold me back, but my current position does not use those tools I was supposed to get a splunk dashboard but the boss put that on the back burner , it’s just so frustrating
Have you looked for jobs at other companies?
