Side Hustle to Self Employed

Conflicted & Unemployed... kinda’

I left a boring but stable job with great people to pursue a job that was closer to home and had better benefits. Turned out it was a horrible fit and I walked away after a week! I didn’t really want to return to my old job but when I called they where thrilled but my position’s hours changed completely and was no longer a good fit for me. This is week 3 with no job. I’ve been building a small business and as soon as I left that last job things started taking off with the business. I sponsored an event, launched my website today for Cyber Monday, I’ve been featured in a blog, been asked to be a sponsor for said blog, I’ve started making a little bit of revenue, and was approved for a small business loan. I started feeling like it was all meant to happened the way it has BUT the rent is almost due and I need to pay my bills. I’m completely dreading going back to a 9-5, I really am tired of working in the medical field, and despite not having a job (paycheck) I feel like I’m on the right path. Sounds a bit ridiculous I know... I’ve applied for a few side hustles where I can work from home but they haven’t panned out well just yet (still waiting to hear back after a couple of weeks). Anyone have any advice? Or have gone through something similar?

You need a plan and to execute on it with your business. I would say that you need to go for the low hanging fruit right away. It would help to know better what the product or service is... A good strategy is to know EXACTLY who your ideal customer is and what they're doing these days (where they are). Look for them with focused attention and don't waste time on things that don't pay immediately. I mean of course you need to build for the future but your short term objective is to get cash in. Give more details if you can. I am sure there's a solution for you. I wish this will work out and you won't be forced to take a job; I honestly feel you when it comes to that 9 to 5!

I did apply to a couple online jobs for writing but never got responses. I did end up doing Instacart which is like Uber Eats for groceries but doesn’t make the money I Need to pay my bills unless I’m constantly picking up orders. I did end up finding a full time job and will keep Instacart as a side hustle and continue to work on my business. I will look at the NextDoor app though, my daughter is 13 and looking for ways to make money, she’d love to baby sit and I want to get her certified so that’s a good idea. Thank you for all the suggestions.

Have you tried any freelancing websites? What about TaskRabbit, Uber, Lyft, or any of the food delivery programs like Door Dash? Perhaps this controlled-by-you revenue stream is right up your alley. Can you rent out space in your place or get a short-term roommate? You can also see if your neighborhood is on the NextDoor App; my neighbors are always looking for sitters, painters, electricians, party planners, etc... you may be able to work not far from home and still make some cash. There are also part-time or seasonal jobs you could apply for as well. If they offer discounts, that could work in your favor until the side hustle really starts to pay off your bills.
