Aegism
Lost my job in March. I have experience and skills in IT Marketing and Fintech Marketing. I know my way around technology and working remotely. I'm looking to get back to the for profit sector after four years at a nonprofit. Sensing employers are not open to hiring someone with lots of work experience. Advice and suggestions welcome!
Hi Pamela. Ageism unfortunately is real. My position was relocated and so I was let go. That was in January 2019. Needless to say it has been a struggle even more so with the current situation. The suggestions above are very good and ones I have followed myself. You are more than welcome to see my resume here and take from it what you want.
The reason I say ageism (and weight) is a factor is that I’ve gotten lots of interest from recruiters when looking at my resume only to get to the in person w/ the hiring manager, then nope. I’ve asked for feedback only to be given the “oh, you were great and they really liked you”, blah, blah, blah. Then explain why they didn’t hire me.
Hang in there. There is lots of support in this community and hopefully something will move forward for you.
Take care.
I've been told that unless your work history includes something you want to highlight, to only include the last 7 to 10 years of employment. The exception to that is if you were employed by your current or most previous employer for longer than 7 years. No need to make an employment seem shorter than it was/is. The reasoning behind that advice was two fold: The first reason I was given is that most recruiters are mainly interested in your recent work experience as they see that as being most relevant. The second reason I was given is to help mitigate ageism.
I was let go prior to the lockdown and I too have 20+ years experience. I do believe ageism is real, just wish I could prove it.
Thank you Laney. As a marketer, I can't help myself but to "test" this premise - lots of experience vs. cut-off at 15 years. I worked at IBM so not a neophyte to technology which is something that is often assumed to be the case with someone with years of experience. Thanks again!
Hi! I worry about this too. I read somewhere that you should only list the last 15 years of work experience on your resume, do not list years for graduation for schooling and don't list anywhere 20+ years experience. The article said that the above calls out that you are a bit older and can potentially fall into the "nope" pile just based on those items on your resume.
I found the advice helpful and adjusted my resume and profiles on LinkedIn and all job boards where I have a profile. Good Luck!
