How do I say...?
I will be laid off early next year. I've known about the layoff since early this year, but I've been waiting to look for a new job until I have an end date and severance package agreement in hand. When I do start looking for a new job I want to make it clear when I'll be available to start, but I'm having a little trouble figuring out where to put this information on my resume and how to word it. Suggestions would be super helpful. TIA!
Start looking immediately! Keep your resume as 'current' because you are, and forget about your severance. (I know how hard that is) It's better to have a solid job and get ahead of the declining job market. Chances are, you can negotiate some of your loss into your new package if you can as a sign on bonus AND/OR negotiate with your current employer to release you early. Reach out if you need help navigating this.
That is very hard advice. I've been with the company for almost 20 years. Between my severance and PTO payout I'm looking at about a year's salary all at once. I don't think I can negotiate that loss.
I bet it is! Is this a retention bonus (they give it to you in order to entice you to stay the entire time)? If not, It sounds like they care about you and there might be wiggle room in the furlough date. I would coach a client to talk to their supervisor at this point. I’m not a big gambler and most analysts are telling us to brace for impact. I’d start with some simple negotiation. Next, I’d start building key relationships with industry leaders to get your next job on the radar (even if you decide that should be next year.)
I'd say to leave it as still as currently employed there. You haven't left till you've left. They only time it should come to play is with a job interview and/or offer. Letting them know that you cannot start till a certain date ( I am assuming the severance and all holds you to staying till your agreed layoff date).
Hope this helps!
