Just out of curiosity: Have you ever received any bad career advice?
From a career counselor, a friend, manager, etc.
I had worked with a mentor for a year and then she offered me to interview for a position under her. I was excited as I knew I could learn a lot about our industry and how to work with her. Then through the interview she said I needed to relocate which I was unwilling to do due to husband career and having a young family. She said to me that I will never go anywhere in my career if I didn't move, I can't have it all, if I was at all serious about my career I would put it above everything and move. I was shocked. I thanked her for her advice and opportunity and ended up moving to another company with significantly higher pay and title than even the position I interviewed for. As a young woman who is confident, a mom, and has done great things like complete a US PhD program in STEM in 33 months I knew whatever she said was wrong. I know that I can have it all and I don't have to relocate and reprioritize my family to have the career that I want.
I’m sorry that happened to you but glad to know that you didn’t listen to her and went on to do great things.
Yes, people tend to advise that I Stay put in a job for much too long. They are always telling me that my salary and benefits are way too good to leave.
I have always followed my gut and jumped to better and better roles with much greater growth, $ and benefits.
