Yes! I’m thankful that my “Spidey Sense”/“Shields Up, Red Alert” alarms activated.
My position was outsourced in July 2020 to TCS; my experience is an an Oracle DBA on Unix systems. I got a text saying that a company wanted to interview me for a remote Oracle DBA position. I was sent a full job description; I checked to see if the company existed (it did).
A first was that the job referred to Oracle 10, which has been desupported since 2010...but I supported an Oracle 8.1.74 application at my former company for years until it was replaced by E-Business 12.1.5
I was told that I’d “be getting a check to cover the cost of a MacBook for remote work” - they’d asked for my credit card, to supposedly put funds on to purchase the MacBook - and I said absolutely not. The alarm bells really started ringing. I was pinged early morning for a couple of days - one morning, I received a FedEx Overnight letter containing a check for $4090.00. The check was for some metal company in Connecticut, drawn on a “Patriot Bank”, the signature looked Photoshopped, and there was no watermark. I replied to the scammers that it was a scam, I wasn’t going to deposit their phony check - and never heard from them again. I filed a report with the Federal Trade Commission and my local police department.
It is unconscionable to prey upon the desperation of unemployed people!
