I got furloughed back in March.
When I didn't get brought back after a few months I got a Data Science Diploma. I've been trying to transition into a data related job. I'm really interested in the Cloud and I'm taking the AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam tomorrow. I've had a hard time finding jobs/internships that don't require previous experience in the IT field or someone who is in their BS or coming out of it. I have a BA and MS and I'm trying to make a career change, but I don't have formal IT experience or a degree that is IT related. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any entry jobs or internships that didn't specifically require being in a school program currently or have prior experience. I'm hoping for somewhere in Texas, but I've accepted that I may have to leave in order to start somewhere. Thank you.
Congratulations on your education! I'd do a search for AWS and just see what companies are looking for that expertise. I'd even look at Amazon's site and see if they're looking for anything related to that - you never know. I know a lot more companies are making the transition to AWS, so now's a great time to be doing what you are doing. I'd guess an AWS search may show you a list of companies that are implementing that storage option, too.
Good luck!
Good on you for making the career switch! I did something similar with Salesforce, and ran into similar problems - everyone wanted 3 years of experience when I only had 3 months of hands-on experience. Reach out to professionals who are doing what you're doing, at companies where you'd like to work and ask for an informational meeting. At the end, ask who else you can speak to at the company. Networking is your BEST bet - to show your worth without the "normal" experience. I just landed a job through networking - the job hadn't even been posted online yet! You can do this!!
Engine1 LP
Look at the company Engine1 online and see if you can find a role that fits your need. I think they are looking for data scientists.
A friend of mine went through a similar experience. He wanted to transition away from education and had trained himself in several coding languages. He started going to meet-ups (which have become virtual during the pandemic) and just talking to professionals. He was able to get a full-time paid internship with a small company that become a full-time position after 6 months and the company paid for several IT certifications.
I suggest reaching out to people in the field and seeing if there are virtual groups near near you. Also reach out to your school(s) and see if they have any resources that can help you.
Congratulations on your diploma! I'd recommend doing a search on Google, LinkedIn or Fairygodboss to see what's available and reach out to other professionals in the field who might be able to share their experience and what's worked for them.
