Fierce IT Leader: HEAR ME ROAR!

Fairygodboss Official Job Seeker Group

So, I haven't posted in about a month and wanted to share a new and disheartening interviewing experience that I am seeing trending.

I have had 3 interviews in the past 4-6 weeks; ranging from VP of Technology to CIO, and then most recently last week, CTO. I was told that only a handful (less than 5) candidates were selected to interview with only (1) being an internal candidate, for each role. This would be a compliment, if there was actually one there. You see, I was brought in as what I call, "the one of 3". What is this you ask? I was brought in to be competitive against the internal candidate; not others. This means that they either weren't sure the internal candidate was right for the role; wasn't experienced enough; OR they didn't want to invest time and money training a new person on their staff. In one interview, I was told that I was the perfect candidate and most experienced BUT they offered the job to an 11 year employee. When I asked for feedback, they said I was perfect for the position but opted to give it to the internal staff member. In the 2nd interview, I was told I was overqualified. This was during a 4 person panel interview with an all male audience. Overqualified translated to something obviously else. Lastly, the most recent interview went to an internal candidate as well. When I asked for feedback, the HR representative stumbled upon her words and said that they went with the internal candidate because "he was already familiar with the team." So, there is the trend...three roles as a female in IT at the executive level. All went to men; all internal candidates. This is very disturbing to me. In the third series of interviews, I was questioned by a panel of 4 (HR, IT, Operations, and Legal). It was an 1.5 hour appointment, in person, an hour away. All I have to say to hiring folks, now, that the pandemic is magically disappearing as it has no political credence anymore is this...don't bring me in unless you really want me for the role. It is quite expensive to invest in gas, travel, clothing, and time to only be presented just to "Check the box!" so that you can promote from within. While I find it a good idea to promote internally, I do not find it legitimate to do so because you have doubts. If the person is really qualified, interviewing others isn't necessary. The truly experienced individual should be promoted without competing with others. Yes, I know that some companies require interviewing three individuals for roles. Just be transparent in the interviewing process, please. Also, the expectations haven't changed. If I am interviewing for an executive level role, I will dress and prepare for the conversation. You should be too. For the CIO role, all 4 men were dressed in polo shirts instead of proper attire for interviewing at that level. I am tired of interviewing. I am more than upset with rejection. It has been a full year. I know I am worthy of a role as I have been interviewed for them. In my opinion, I am being told I am "overqualified" as a means to say that I am either too old or the wrong gender. I have had folks tell me here that I must be doing something wrong in my interviews and it's my fault for not getting the roles. I can appreciate your opinions but that isn't the case. I ask for feedback every time and am told that there wasn't anything wrong. In one of the interviews, I was told that I had the best discussion and answered the most intelligently! So, I know it isn't me. I try to always have an upbeat and positive thought process to the whole painful experience of interviewing. I will tell you, that there have been more down days for me lately than up. Earlier this week, I didn't want to get out of bed and do the "rinse and repeat" of getting everyone off to school and work and then beating my keyboard for roles either on portals like here and LinkedIn or through my network. I know many of you are experiencing the same thing. I am just really tired of spending so much time, money, and effort into discussions that never pan out. I am also tired of being overlooked because of discrimination in some fashion. If anyone is looking for a hard working, extremely bright, IT executive, give me a holler! As for those looking for employment, I feel for you and wish you lots of luck and hopefully, great success in your mission.

Hi, I'm sorry for your experience, last year I feel like I was in the same boat. I would always make it to the final round interview, but an internal candidate would get the job. I started to have imposter syndrome and I knew I was a strong woman capable of landing a job. I work at American Family Insurance as a Diversity Recruiting Manager. We have and going to have some IT positions open in the near future. If you want to let me know what you are looking for, I can see if anything matches your interests. I wish you the best of luck! And you will land somewhere that is perfect for you. When I have a disappointment in my life, I tell myself that the universe has other plans instore for me.

Feel free to reach out if you would be interested in roles at my company. I'd be delighted to introduce you to our CTO.

First, I want to say that I feel for you, have been in your shoes (I even had one interviewer ask me why I would even want the position I was interviewing for), and do not at all think that this is right. But, I would like to offer a bit of reframing. - Sometimes companies have to interview outside candidates to show that they have made an exhaustive search for the right candidate before they make an internal hire. - There is a good chance that they weren't totally sold on the internal candidate as the right fit, but that internal candidate interviewed really well. - It could be that you were closely tied with the internal candidate and they went with the safer bet. Making a bad hire is expensive. - It could have come down to a panel decision that was split. - As to the men in polo shirts, could this just be indictive of the company culture? - Also, in regards to feedback, many companies don't offer real or specific feedback because it puts them in a liability situation. Again, I want to say, I don't think that these are right, but hopefully, just looking at the situation from the other side can help you feel as though you are not being discriminated against.

I too am sorry. You hit the nail on the head though, "In my opinion, I am being told I am "overqualified" as a means to say that I am either too old or the wrong gender. " Mature women like you and me are always "overqualified". I'm getting sick of it too, but I have two kids in college that depend on my income so they will "only" have so much in student loans. I also need income for myself. So tomorrow, I'll set the alarm for 7am, put on the coffee, meditate for 10 minutes, thank the Universe for all the things I DO have in my life, and sit back down in my home office. I'll network, make some calls, send some emails and hope to connect to that ONE person who is willing to give me a chance.

Ahh Whippoor - it's like we are connected in some sad, twisted psychic wavelength. I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I can only empathise because it parallels my own situation. Very much over the ""rinse and repeat" of getting up and family off on a good start to sit down and tap relentlessly on my laptop sending out letters of inquiry, hunting roles, networking on LinkedIn. I have over 15 years of experience driving editorial, broadcast and digital projects for fortune 50 companies to start ups to NGOs. It's very difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel certain days. Thank you for your courage in posting - it's not an enviable position but knowing there are others frustrated helps (me) identify and put things in perspective. Wishing you much luck in landing a post congruent with your extensive experience.

I am so sorry that you are experiencing these hard times. I don´t work in IT but I can relate to your experience. I´ve also been exposed to be part of a mise-en-scène and it was devastating when I noticed it. The worst experience was when, my own boss (who is a woman and calls herself my mentor) recommended me for a higher position in another organization, clearly aware of the situation, just to show me off (and in her own interest). I deeply understand the helplessness feeling after investing time, energy, and money on those processes.Of course, organizations can hire whoever they want just don´t play with people looking for a job: it is unethical.

I’m a recruiter and woman in IT. What you described isn’t surprising. It is a known statistical fact that women in IT are discriminated against. The job market is still very competitive. We might be overcoming the pandemic but the job market is going to take some time to recover. I think you should invest in a session with a career coach. They will offer unfiltered and valuable advice specific to your situation.

Thanks. I have worked with a coach and hired a resume writer as well. I have followed both sets of guidance. I think the employers know they have the upper hand as many folks are trying to find work due to covid cuts.

Clearly you are qualified. Clearly you are intuiting some important information throughout your interviewing experience. Your mindset is highly important throughout these endeavors. Focus your attention and intention where you will get a return. Choose to interview with opportunities where you feel and believe you will receive a fair assessment and chance to succeed. Your instincts will guide you. Allow these myopic companies to be who they are right now. You are bigger than that and will find your place. I believe in YOU!

I'm so sorry that you had to deal with this b*llsh*t. let's connect. I'm a CTO at a startup and I'd be happy to introduce you to someone in my network who is hiring (if you need an introduction) and you never know, I need a VP of Technology in a few months and because I control all of the hiring on my team, I will have more women than men on my dev and data teams :) (let's chat)
