What do you consider when comparing offers?
I'm daydreaming that one day soon we'll all be deciding between two or more job offers!
So - I'm curious - outside of the job responsibilities, what factors do you consider most important?
I know we each have our own preferences, but I'm curious what you compare and how you prioritize! Pay, benefits, commute, manager, cool company logo - anything is fair game!
I would say I prioritize :
1. Wage you have to live and and if I make enough to live a decent life style I don’t have to worry about bills , food and lodging I can concentrate on the job more
2. Culture/ environment I want to like the people I work with and not have a toxic environment like I have now
3. What can I learn? Can I apply my skills now and learn new things? Have no desire to do the same thing all day long everyday forever
4. Career path growth can I move around? Can I Grow?
5. Flexibility. Can I work from home when I need to?
6. Benefits health, vacation personal time sick time Very important I want to have a life to and I amy to be healthy
I don’t want to compromise on any of these, I believe I will find my dream job and relocate to the place I want to live
Hi, Annie! For me one the most important aspect is the reputation and stability of the company. This is were I typically start. Culture comes next and very close to the number one, as they are somewhat inter-related. Everything else, I feel, it evolves from there.
here is what I look for (hopefully I have them listed in order)
1. wage + title + company reviews + manager-fit
- I have listed these four together because I won't work for a dysfunctional company or a bad manager for (almost) any money
2. Product uniqueness
- I work in Product and I want to work on Products that are interesting to me (have a social impact, doing something really interesting in a traditional non-tech space, or impacting people's life in a meaningful way)
3. Tech Stack uniqueness
4. Benefits/Stocks
5. Team diversity (or willingness of the company to hire diversity)
- I want to work with an existing diverse team and if the team is very white and very male (which is the norm), I will only work for companies that are willing to support my hiring of diverse team members
6. Current corporate challenges (including company phase)
- I like working for companies that are facing a challenge (which is most companies these days, but not all). Challenge may be from competitor, fundraising challenges, market changes
7. Opportunity for advancement
Advancement is lower on my list because I'm near the top of my career trajectory and I'm usually hired in at or near the top of the career ladder.
and I think that's my list. I'm interested in seeing what others have to say :)
