I have a virtual interview with my dream job!
Although I wasn't expecting to hear much from recruiters, I just received a virtual interview invite with a potential new boss. I'm excited but also nervous as I've never done a virtual interview. There's also a lot of technical things that could go wrong with video chatting. We'll be using zoom. Any interview advice is much appreciated!
Awesome news and good luck. Zoom is super easy to use and as others have stated, download and practice a bit before your interview. Dress professionally and remember that the interviewer will be able to see and hear what is behind you. Make sure your computer is organized and not cluttered in case they do ask for you to share your screen, you will be able to find what they ask quickly. If using a laptop, just place it on a desk, table or something sturdy. You don't want it moving around. And just pretend it is a in person interview and you will do fine.
Thank you!
Best wishes! Couple pointers- I actually got my own Zoom in advance of an interview so that I could put the video on and see what I looked like. Be attentive to your most professional background. Try not to talk with your hands a lot or move a lot during the interview, it can be distracting. Remember that to look in the 'eye' of the interviewer, you have to look at the little camera, not at their actual picture. A note can help or move the person (hold and drag) right up to the top of the screen and still try to talk into the camera! Consider resting the laptop on something so that it is level and you are not filming your chin. All of this is just so you are confident when the time comes! Go get 'em!
Excellent advice!
thank you!
Zoom is super intuitive and user friendly. You can even download the free app and use an iPhone or iPad (but when you do, you will enter a meeting ID # when prompted, instead of clicking on a link). Many people think you need headphones but they are not really necessary. The most important thing to do is “have no fear” and practice. Touch/ practice with all the icons and have fun. Make sure you pay attention to your background noise and your actual background. For a job interview, a plain painted wall and proper lighting is key.
thanks for the advice, conrez!
Ah, that's amazing! Prepare yourself on if you're going to use headphones as well. Sometimes it takes a second to connect with your computer and it's best to just have it ready to go (if that's the approach you end up taking). Be yourself and you'll crush it!
Thanks for the advice!
Congratulations! Agreed with Olivia -- test your technology. :) There are certain tools you might want to use during your interview -- such as muting your voice or sharing your screen. Please keep us posted with your interview and best of luck!
Will definitely practice!
Congratulations! Zoom is a great product. If you aren't familiar with it though, I'd recommend downloading it now and practicing video conferencing with a friend or family member! It's also a tool I've been using a lot to keep up with friends.
Great points, thank you!
