Why I'm here
Hi Everyone!
I'm so glad to join this group. I've been working in my career for 2.5 years (took some time off to travel and find myself). Lol during my time off I realized I want to do something else, but don't know what. For now I'm still in engineering, but I'm here for ideas!
Thank you for the advice! I've added it to my audible wishlist and will try the accomplishment assignment.
Alice
A few other thoughts. love the book "Do What You Are" Tieger. Have recommended it to others pondering their professional future.
Write down 7 accomplishments you are most proud of from your life (can be volunteer, helping a friend, professional) and look at what you enjoyed about the experience, what was your role in it, who else was involved. This might help you see trends for how to use the skills you like most and the situations you are most successful in.
Lastly, talk to people about what they do - especially things you aren't familiar with. You can learn lot just by asking. Good luck
1- Take this simple assessment of career interests (5 minutes to take the survey, you'll be exploring the answers for a couple of hours):
https://www.mynextmove.org/explore/ip
This will help you generate ideas for what types of jobs would interest you, and get a general sense for how much those types of jobs pay.
2- Create a picture of your ideal job(s) by completing the information in Dick Bolles' Job Hunting Map (plan to spend 30-60 min on each petal). The book is out of print but you can see it here: https://archive.org/details/newquickjobhunti00boll
Hi! Thanks, I took the survey and then forgot to respond! Thanks so much for the resource. It somewhat solidified that I'm NOT in the right field and gave me some ideas...some I've already thought about. Super helpful. Thank you!
Glad to hear you took advantage of the resources! The job hunting map is detailed but really helpful for your immediate need and to reflect as you change jobs over the years

Welcome, Alice! Do you have any ideas of what you want to do, or definitely don't want to do?
Hi Alice! Are you open to opportunities in NYC?
My heart jumped a bit at the thought of moving. Let's talk! I'll send you a message.
I'm in the process of figuring out things I love to do and how to fit that into a career. I love management things, budgeting, list making, organizing, analytical thinking, variety of work, talking to people, helping others, being supportive, collaborating (sometimes). Thanks for asking!! Lol if you have any ideas please let me know. I'm a little lost. I'm in grad school for engineering management, but I'm so afraid that i'll get into it and hate it.
In my experience, even when I hated a job, I learned a LOT there. So, don't lose hope! Figuring out what you might love is tough, I can totally relate to that. From what you've said, perhaps a rotational program at some of the larger corporations might be a good fit for you? Something to investigate! I'd also set up some time to talk to your college advisors as well, they might be able to point you in the right direction as far as figuring out how to narrow down the available opportunities. The demand for female talent in STEM has never been greater- so I would advise you to apply widely, be really choosy and ask tough questions once you've gotten offers, and try to learn about company culture during the interview process. Best of luck!
Thanks Sue! I've always been curious about rotational programs, but have never been fortunate enough to get an opportunity for one. I think you're onto something though! I think a management rotational program would be best for me, if anything like that exists.
