Addressing Being Laid Off on a Resume?

Hi, everyone. I was laid off almost two years ago after the company I was working for eliminated my position nation-wide, and haven't gotten an interview since I started my job search. I am trying to use my customer service experience from 11 years in retail to break into a better field, but I'm having no luck. Many of the places I'm applying for don't want cover letters, so I'm wondering if including that I was laid off at the end of that job's description on my resume might help employers understand my situation and make them more willing to give me a chance. I know a lot of companies won't hire people who are unemployed, but it's not like I wanted to lose my job. For wording, I was thinking along the lines of "Laid off in due to corporate downsizing, February 2018." Placement, under the description of my responsibilities at that job. Thank you for your input!
