Handling Job Rejection
Have you been dealing with job rejection lately? How are you handling it?
It's easy to get discouraged but here's some perspective:
** I posted a job for an unpaid internship and within a week received over 1600 applicants
** In one week a senior HR position received over 800 applicants.
Don't get discouraged, get strategic!
Yes, I have received declines from jobs many times in my life. This happens to everyone at some point. Hiring decisions are often based on different factors beyond your control. Just move on. There's a better opportunity waiting for you!
Job rejection can be painful especially if you have been searching for a job for quite a long time. One thing I did when I experienced rejection was to sharpen my skills. I signed up for a couple classes in the areas I figured I could improve. By doing this, I gained self confidence and also prepared myself for a better outcome the next time I applied for a job.
I also found an opportunity to do volunteer work. While it did not pay a salary, it did provide me with transferable skills that I could use in my next job. Concentrating on the rejection only hurts you so look at it as an opportunity to grow.
It is very discouraging. While it is a difficult job market, it can be really demoralizing to receive rejections for jobs that one is overqualified for. I agree that it can feel incredibly personal and lead to a sense of hopelessness. Know that you are not alone. That may be of little consolation, but there are others experiencing the same situation and feelings. Reach out for support - for advice or just to vent or commiserate a little. You are not alone.
Not well. It's been two years since I was laid off from a university job, and every "ghosting" or flat-out "no" is starting to feel very personal. I'd cry, but I don't think I'd ever stop. I just keep trying, and hoping that someone out there will have use for me.
Hang in there, Laura. It can be so demoralizing, but never doubt your worth and what you bring to the table. I hope you find something great and perfect for you that values your experience and talents soon. Take care.
