Job offer received! But I have a negotiation question
So I just scored my dream job (yay!) — and always been told to negotiate with whatever the first offer is. But the benefits and pay are both over than what I expected. I don’t want to regret having the chance to negotiate and looking for advice on what to do. What has been your negotiation strategy in the past? Any tips?
Doing some research really helps! Check out websites like Glassdoor for your role at both the company you have the offer from and a similar company if you can find one so you can compare that to your offer. I usually start with how excited I am for the offer and the opportunity to work at the company but based on your experience/skills (this is where you need to provide details) you were expecting X. Also, I agree with above that there are other things besides salary. When I got my last offer, the company told me they couldn't increase my salary but I was able to negotiate a signing bonus and an additional week of vacation. Good luck!
There are things other than salary that you can also negotiate such as a travel fund (if you tend to travel) or flexibility with hours/remote options.
They most likely expect you to negotiate a reasonable ask. Think bigger. I'm sure you deserve it! Congrats!
If there are any professional development opportunities to negotiate, this is a great chance.
