Time to Change Our Mindset as the World Is Changing
How many of you here are unemployed? If you are, what have you been doing about it? Do you feel hope or hopeless?
I have been unemployed coming up on a year now. The company I worked for is based in Toronto, ON and their first US location had to close. We had a good two years and I learned so much. It was an exceedingly small team of three employees, and it was like starting our own business from scratch.
I had never done much work with marketing prior, but it really interested me. I learned so much about SEO optimization and Google Analytics. I set up our location’s social media platforms and consistently uploaded content for all.
When the store closed, it was the beginning of January. I had no idea what was to come, but I took all the necessary precautions and set up a budget so that I could pay my bills in full and on time. I did not have 3-6 months of savings that is suggested in case of something like this happening. I was, however, hopeful that I would find another position quickly.
Then COVID-19 hit, and I went from receiving about five interviews for every 20 jobs I applied to down to zero. I did not have a clue as to what I was doing wrong. Then I “met” Sasha Lipskaia (www.sashalipskaia.com). We started an exchange of services. I would help her with SEO, her website, and anything else that she needed, and she would coach me back to life.
Lost in this situation with no end in sight, it was the perfect time for her to contact me. I was open to it and she was not trying to sell me anything. She is a light at the end of the tunnel for me. She has reminded me of my purpose and of what I truly desire in this life. I was so beaten down that I had forgotten my way and became comfortable in doing the bare minimum. I needed to change.
So many people are trying so hard to sell their programs and/or courses these days with astronomical fees, even after reduced. I know most of these courses have so much information and it is worth it. It is just not practical while so many people are still on unemployment and worrying about upcoming bills or when they are going to be able to go grocery shopping again.
I propose this. Let us really help each other out; with knowledge, with work, and with opportunities. Whether it be an exchange of services, internship, or freelance/contractor, I am open to suggestions. I love creating content in all its glorious forms and would love to work remotely so that one day I, too, can be working on that beach in Bali. And I would say to everyone open to it, come join me!
No one should be stuck in one place, one city, one cubicle.
I love this and I love engaging and helping others! My position was eliminated in April so I’ve been in the hunt. I’ve applied for literally hundreds of jobs and have had 3 interviews. It’s frustrating to say the least
Agreed! We all need to help one another. I've been unemployed since COVID hit at the end of March, and it's been hard getting enough freelance work to survive. I have thought about bartering services with people, as well as small businesses in my area, especially the ones I frequent. I think that's a win-win situation in many ways! And, I've been offering up help to professional groups I'm in ... offers to have them "ask me anything about marketing/messaging" in the comments of posts so I can give a little direction to small business owners, and I even offered free website "quick-audits." NOT ONE PERSON has taken me up on it, which surprised me immensely!
I was really floundering from January to July. Now I feel like things are clear now. Before I did not know why I wasn't getting those jobs, but if I had I would have been so miserable still. Yes, I would be making money and have stability, but I wouldn't have any time for my true passions. This time has been a blessing in a way for me. It has made me fully realize what I want and what I definitely do not want.
Unfortunately, there are just too many people giving elevator-pitches out there and ads are abundant. I take notes on the free stuff, but I don't have 100s of dollars to spend (even if I did I wouldn't spend it on most of these courses).
If you are interested in working with me, let me know. I would love to help you in any way that I can.
