Hi All,
I’ve been looking for work for several months and restructured my resume numerous times. I hired a career coach with no success, they were happy to take thousands of dollars though. My background is in video editing, producing creative advertising. I have aged out of those jobs, tech and social media changed out biz, so going for producing / project management in advertising or anywhere really. Still no luck. I’m happy to do something completely different but I’m in a catch 22 spot. My background is limiting my chances to find something new. I’m single, 59, ready willing and able to work. I have tons of experience with computer platforms, workflows, etc. Any suggestions on how I can get a job at a stable company that would welcome a former creative from New York City?
Try to stay away from limiting terms. It’s only going to be a hindrance. I’m so sorry a career coach didn’t help you. There are plenty of them out there right now, resume writers too, so we have to remain on high alert.
List out the best of everything you are, your skills, experience, and you as a person, and read and build on it daily. Do not let naysayers get in your way. I have limited my time on LinkedIn and even this site so that I don’t get discouraged.
Your future is all in your mind, so create the one you want. Seriously. You’ll see. I wish you the best and I know you’ll create it. Just believe it.
Have you tapped into the "hidden job market"? Ie., are you targeting specific companies to network and establish rapport with active employees who can help you see what jobs are coming on the horizon, help you connect with the hiring managers, and eve refer you? If you're coach didn't recommend this, then that wasn't a very good coach.
I understand your pickle. Share that you have 30 years of experience (which makes you seem "overqualified") or rework your resume to include the most recent and relevant work? Tough call. Have you considered shifting over to consulting or starting your own business? Fiverr and Upwork might value your vast experience more than in-house or agency positions.
Do you have a website, portfolio and examples of prior projects that showcase your work?
I would say the resume itself takes a back seat to showcasing your work on a website.
In advertising and creative fields, how you present yourself is your own next challenge. If a client came to you and asked for an advertising and marketing campaign to sell themselves, how would you do it? Use those skills and media to showcase yourself, as if you were the client.
Reels, demos, presentations, social media, posts on X , Instagram and TikTok are all needed in the world of advertising today. Use them all to showcase your experience and talents. Be sure your first point of contact, whether it be a resume or your LI profile, contains links to all the others, so a company can easily find you and your work.
Good luck, cheering for you!
Yes, I have an entire website devoted to my former work as a video editor. The creative content landscape has changed so drastically over the past 6 years that my work is irrelevant. I guess, I must be more proactive about advertising my brand. I am incorporated; Mermaid Media Inc. and I have been working for myself since 2001. I didn't think editing was appropriate since there are so many young people out there doing great things. Competition is fierce in this biz. I just want a high-paying project manager or strategy / digital-producing job to take me through my 60's! I just want to work!
Update your portfolio and website for what you've been up to the last 6 years. I can't find Mermaid Media Inc online. You need to be easier to locate if you want a job. We all want high paying jobs, but you'll need to show relevant and recent experiences for what you're asking.
