Brag Book
Hi, Everyone,
I'm interviewing for a position, & have been asked to put together a "brag book". Any suggestions?
Thank you!
I work in a Postnet and we have print several of these for people. You didn't say what the job is, I have seen some that were for graphic work, some for teachers the largest I've done were for police officers.
Make a contents page! Let people know what is in the book. page 1 is... and use tabs with the different sections
A simple paragraph about the job and why you want it.
In the back I would put any copies of award certificates you have and perhaps a copy of your diplomas.
barb_hansen post has great ideas!
A print shop can print on a nicer paper and bind it for you. This can make it stand out compared to others. And the nicer paper is especially important if its for a things that will print with alot of ink, like photos and graphics.
Good Luck!
Thank you!
Look to the job description for this position as you create your brag book. Of course you need to be honest, but it would be to your advantage to highlight things that show your enthusiasm for and previous success with things deemed important in the position you are applying for.
Thank you!
About half way through my career (so about 10 years ago), I started to keep a "portfolio" of my work product, like a designer would. I'm not a designer nor do I do anything in the creative space but I stole the concept of a designer's portfolio.
I use a big 3 ring binder with tabs for the different types of work that I do (or I used to do):
- information architecture
- technical requirements
- strategy documents & presentations
- product launch timelines
- product budgets
- etc etc
In the first section of the binder, I have a list of the products that I have ideated & launched and a list of products I have worked on. I separate out ideated and worked on because it's one thing to come up with a solution for a problem and launch it and another thing to work on someone else's idea (both are valuable, they are just different)
I used to bring that binder to all interviews and it always got a great reception (that's an interesting question, let me know you how I solved this problem at company XYZ or let me show you an example of how I handled issue ABC in the past).
FYI: I disambiguate the company name and any proprietary information, so I don't step on any confidentiality issues.
And it was always a great pick-me-up to look through the binder and see everything I have done in my career before walking into an interview.
I used to keep this binder up-to-date as my career progressed with new stuff, so it was easy to grab an always-up-to-date binder.
Great suggestion. Thank you!
I made one before at staples worth a binding and a laminated cover and soft back. It got me a great job at Estée Lauder. Those finishing touches show your serious.
Thank you!
I was asked for 3 references and reaching out and trying to figure out who to ask I was so happy when I talked to my contacts. I got the most wonderful replies from people and I used their quotes, things like 'any company would be lucky to have you', 'you are an incredible connector'. Good luck!
I really like that idea!
