2 Years later and I'm still job searching.
A year before I left my previous job I started to job search. However, I was able to secure a contract job when I left my previous employer.
I have my Masters, and I am change management and lean six sigma green belt certified however, the challenge has been getting in the door for an interview. I have also come to the conclusion that others who stated they were experiencing ageism in the hiring process that they were telling the truth.
I am looking for full time work, but I am blessed to be working with a excellent company out of palmdale (CA) remotely which is great.
I have been a resident of Los Angeles CA since birth but now I'm looking to branch out if I have to (Relocation) dare I say it. I have started to reach out to recruiters in AZ and NV but I will always love my home in California but if I cannot find any work I have to go. Does anyone have any recruiters or know of hiring managers in either state that I can reach out to for PM work? administration, education pretty much the business services side of the workforce.
How did you find a local job search group? I have been looking for 6 months - many interviews. But the job descriptions are so detailed that it's hard to meet ALL the requirements no matter what your age is.
I am working with 4 recruiters and plan to add 4 more. They hear about jobs that are not publicly listed.
All was going pretty well for me until Friday March 13th, when the bottom fell out of my job search and all my Airbnb guests cancelled for the next 6 months.
My advice is to build a bank of recruiters and keep networking on LinkedIn.
If you're in my state, I can help you find a group.
Check Meetup for "job search groups", "professional associations", and check your unemployment office. Most career or job search coaches host or know of groups too.
I'm in the same boat. I'm asking myself what I can control, and the short answer is my circle of friends.
Recruiters here tell me that networking is how boomers are getting hired. We already have the experience and the education. What gets us over the hump is an advocate who can say "This is the person I want in my office."
So I'm upping my connections game, reaching out to 5 of my LinkedIn connections every day. I'm also mining LI for new connections. My local job search group has gone to online meetings, and we're all doing Skype coffee dates in these Plague Days in addition to our regular meeting.
My personal Achilles hill is interview skills. So I'm reaching out to my fellow job searchers for interview practice on Skype or Zoom.
That's what I've got. Thoughts?
I haven't had an issue in interviews, the problem is getting a call for the interview.
I've been in that boat and possible could be in it again. It is really a shame because I believe mature workers have as much to give to a company as younger ones, and vice versa.
My husband also has a master’s and lean six black belt. Also 50+ Has also been out of work for 2 years. He has done some consulting but nothing permanent. There’s just too many college grads that can do it cheaper, in the eyes of the company. PS not to get political but we are in Georgia a heavy Republican state with large amounts of manufacturing (which is what my husband does). So it has nothing to do with politics!!
I don’t think we need to get political. Ageism is everywhere. I am 50, with a lot of great experience, and have been out of work for more than a year. It is hard to compete with fresh college graduates who will take half of what I am worth.
California is under consequences of liberalism, everything is dying. NV is booming, worth a try.
Thank you Rosangela, I plan to do that ASAP.
