Outdated resume tips needed
I am back in the world of job interviews and need to update/redo my resume. It's been since 2008 since I've applied for a job. Looking for resume samples and tips please! thank you!
As someone who conducted many interviews, the one thing that I can say that immediately tuned me off of a prospect is poor spelling/grammar mistakes.
Here are two things I see fairly regularly on job seeker resumes and that you should avoid.
- A self-centered "Objective" at the top of the resume that says what you are looking for, e.g., "a challenging position where I can learn and grow." Employers aren't hiring so they can help a job seeker learn and grow; their primary concern is what value you can add.
Instead, grab attention right away with a concise professional profile that differentiates you and pitches you as the best fit for the position, by highlighting key experience, accomplishments and top skills.
- Presenting experience as a bulleted list of job duties/responsibilities with no accomplishments. Duties describe the basic requirements of the role. Merely listing duties won’t distinguish you and help you stand out in a crowded field—every other applicant with a similar role will be able to list the same duties. Accomplishments, on the other hand, will show how well you performed the requirements compared to other applicants.
Here is an example.
Duty: Sold merchandise and served customers.
Accomplishment: Generated $5,000 in merchandise sales daily, serving a record 80—100 customers per day.
Best of luck with your job search!
I suggest livecareer.com for resume templates and bullet point examples based on job title that you can make your own with your achievements. The other option is to hire Sam Oke he will do an amazing and updated cover letter, resume and Linkedin profile for $197.
I always start my resume bullet points with a verb and make sure to use the same tense throughout. It's a great way to keep things consistent.
What kind of career are you pursuing? That might help choose your template but when in doubt, traditional templates are the way to go.
