I had a situation where a previous employer refused to confirm my employment, even for the unemployment insurance, or provide a reference. This prevented me from getting a job for months. I finally had to tell potential employers they couldn't contact them and why. Maybe have a friend or that career coach call one of your professional references from that company, tell them to say they are considering hiring you for a position and see what they say. It is a little sneaky but it could narrow down the issue.
