Any job hunting advice for a brand Strategist who is 55?
My job ends in January :(
use your breadth of experience as your strong suit and not something you feel is a disadvantage
Here's what has worked for me.
I brand myself an expert. Someone with deep insight in a narrow field. This means I cut out all the obvious skills like creating teams, project management, planning skills, etc. I focus on the high level deliverables like launching new products or service line, adding niche revenue streams, combing work flows.....anything that speaks to your vision and ability to seize opportunities. The other skills are obviously skills you've mastered to get where you are, to command the compensation you deserve and to lead. It's the high level of expertise you bring that wins top jobs, compensation and interest.
Don't dumb it down.
great suggestions !
Bullshit. Companies have a pay scale , and they don't up it just because you have greater expertise. We are talking about most workers, not the privileged.
It's called negotiation. If your expertise is compelling enough and there is room at the top end you will establish your fit.
Perhaps you are of the mindset that you take what you can get. For me that is selling yourself short.
I've use my expertise to aim higher. It's work for my entire career.
They have a payscale for managers and another for director and still another for VP.
Many on this platform have had to step down a level to be considered for a job because they are not being considered for the their level of expertise. I'm just suggesting that positioning yourself as an expert in your field will help your chances and avoid accepting a job one or two levels down. So if you see that has privileged, then I'm wondering if you can relate.
I hate reading posts from posters that under sell themselves because they allow others to position them because they didnt.. these are talented people they are stuck rebuilding a career back to where it was and that can take years. The idea is to fight to stay level or ahead of where you were. It's been my experience that .you do that by branding yourself an expert.
I'd say focus on your own personal brand and marketing your best skills and knowledge. Emphasize how you bring value to a company. You might want to think about how you will deal with ageist comments and dispel myths about people who are 50+. Reassure them that you are up-to-date on technology and very energetic. You're capable and your experience is an asset.
